I am trying to find the marriage of my gt gt gt gt grandparents Joseph Joseph and Esther Levy, and details of their children. From directories on Jewishgen / Jeffrey Maynard I have Joseph's business address: JOSEPH, Joseph pencil maker 439 Strand WC Holden 1799 JOSEPH, Joseph Pencil Maker 18 St Martins Ct St Martins Lane Holden 1805 JOSEPH, J black lead pencil mfer 18 Bedford St, Covent Gdn WC Underhill 1822 JOSEPH, J black lead pencil maker 7 Oxford St Pigot 1824, Kent 1827, Pigot 1828, Robson 1830 His son Henry was born c. 1804 in St Martins in the Field, Westminster (from 1841, 1851 & 1861 census) Joseph's daughter Matilda was born 1/1/1809 according to her Australian death certificate, which was also how I found her mother's name.) I suspect Esther Joseph nee Levy died a little before 1836, as Henry's daughter Esther (my gt gt grandmother) was born abt 1836. Henry married Louisa Van Millingen under the auspices of the Hambro Synagogue 27th Oct 1830, although I haven't found any other relevant records for my Joseph family in the Hambro registers. Henry Joseph emigrated to Australia in 1863, having switched his name to Joseph Henry (following bankruptcy and misdemeanors.) Can anyone suggest any other sources I could try for bmd or other records for the family? I've tried Gaby & Angela's synagoguescribes site, and have also looked at microfilms of synagogue registers at the Watford Mormon family history centre. Many thanks Danielle Sanderson nee Myers Bushey, Herts Researching (mainly) MYERS (from Seta, Kovno to Belfast, and from Hamburg to Ramsgate and Middlesex), TAMUZ (from VILNIUS to Birmingham), HARRIS, BEIRNSTEIN & FREEDMAN (from Kalvarija), AARON(S), BELCHER (Birmingham), BEUGEL-COHEN, SHENKMAN (from Vitebsk), WOOLFE, VAN MILLINGEN, STIBBE, ISAACS, JACOBS and JOSEPH etc.
Hello Barbara Lobie might be a version of Libe which could show as Lily, Lillian or Libby Isaacs. Where did you see the name of Lobie Annie mentioned. Have you found the births for her siblings on FreeBMD http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl Their birth district might assist in pinpointing her birth as well. <'Lobie' is short for..Barbara, England> Naomi Ogin Brisbane

I am attempting to locate a grave and then hopefully a photo of same. It is unlikely but not impossible that she is buried in a Jewish cemetery. Sister SYMONS nee Frydman (could be Freedman). And I'm not at all sure about the first name--the first name may be a transliteration from the Yiddish or not. She was born in Stopnice, Poland c.1870s, and immigrated to London. I do not know year of death. Altho she was born to an orthodox Jewish family, she married Mr. Symonds who may have been a Christian gentleman. They may have lived in Hampstead or Finchley. They had a daughter Isobel (Isabella, Belma) b ?. Belma married A.C. Masney (David) Gruner in 1917; they had 2 children, Anthony b1921 + Rebecca b1924. David Gruner died in 1958; Belma in 1981. I know the rest of the lineage, including grandchildren. However, I have contacted Gruner family members and they do not know where Sister SYMONS is buried nor do they have any additional info about her. I have searched on findagrave & cemetery scribes, and I've emailed Edmonton & Rainham Cemeteries. I have also searched on Jewish Chronicle website for birth, wedding, or death announcement. I only found an entry for what appears to be Anthony Gruner's mother-in-laws death announcement...*her nine children, and son-in-law, Tony Gruner, grandchildren, Peter, Michele, Alan and Nicola...* in the AUGUST 11 1967 (Page:2/3) JC edition. -- Kindest Regards, Ann Linder Florida USA

Hi Linda It could be a Yiddish nickname for Shabsay and can be Sapsl for example. You might find him as Samuel or Louis Markson. There is a birth for a Samuel Morrison in Leeds, March quarter, 1862. Sounds a bit like Markson. <Does anyone know what name Sapsey is a nickname for?? Linda Wolfe Kelley, California> Naomi Ogin Brisbane
Hello. I'm try to trace on various census Lobie Annie ISAACS. She was born about 1874, daughter of Rosetta [1848] and Samuel ISAACS [abt 1848]. Her siblings are Maurice 1876, Isaac 1878, and Jane 1881. All were born in the Spitalfields area. I have no idea what the name 'Lobie' is short for and would like to know. There is a possibility the family went abroad at some point, as when Jane ISAACS, grandmother [1816] died in 1893, notices were in the Jewish Chronicle [May 12th], with the note, American and Colonial papers please copy. Any help appreciated. Kind regards. Barbara. England.
Hi Trudy, Not sure why your mail bounced! I lent the book to someone and they have never returned it. Try Leodis http://www.leodis.net/ great photos there for Back Nile Street in the first decade of 20th century HTH Sherry Landa (Oxford, UK) I tried and my request was returned to me that email address was no longer valid. The photo in particular I'd like to see is "Back Nile Street" from 1908

Jacob Lewis was naturalized in 1884, he listed his parents as Israel and Minnie Lewis of Kovno, Russia. It said he was married (Fanny (Jane Smith) is wife and at that time 3 kids, Lazarus 6 yrs, Mary 3 yrs and Etty 1 yr. Living at 39 Busfield St. Leeds, first in 1887-1894 then 19 Brunswick St in 1894 Anyone connected to this family or have info on Kovno Russia. Jacob was said to have went to the UK with some brothers. Possible Solomon? Judi USA Lewis, Smith, Galifsky, Cramer
I am trying to view a photograph from the collection of "Glimpses of Jewish Leeds Photographs". Photos from this grouping were availabe to view in .jpg form by contacting the admin team. I tried and my request was returned to me that email address was no longer valid. The photo in particular I'd like to see is "Back Nile Street" from 1908 from page 3. Does anyone know how to access this or have this photo - my family I am researching lived on this street in the early 1900's so I would very much like to see it. Thanking you all in adance, Trudi Bayes Miami, Fl
Does anyone claim these early Leeds MARKSONs? In 1871 Census, there was Bernard MARKSON, 40, and wife, Sarah, 30. Only one child: Sapsey, 9. B. and S. were b. in Poland. They claimed Sapsey was b. in Leeds, but no record of his birth registered in Yorkshire BMD. Several questions: Were they from Mariampol? What were their original given and surnames? What became of them? [Does anyone know what name Sapsey is a nickname for??] Thank you!! Linda Wolfe Kelley California

Hi Angie There is a Barnett Naviasky passed away March quarter 1919 in Leeds aged 57. Could that be Jeremy. Matches the birth year. <Does anyone have details of a Jeremy Neviasky b. 1862 Angie Elfassi, Israel> Naomi Ogin Brisbane
Looking for information on the family name ATACK in the West Yorkshire area and in Scotland. In particular, David ATACK, born around 1809 in Huddersfield. Thank you Grant Smith - Huddersfield
Thanks for that Brenda. Judi Conway is researching the Lewis's in Leeds. According to their Hebrew Marriage Authorisation, Jacob's Hebrew name is Yakov Arieh son of Azriel Zelig and Jane/Fanny's Hebrew name is Feiga Rosa daughter of Akiva. Interesting that Jacob's father was a Shoemaker. Perhaps Jacob learnt the trade from him. <there were so many slipper makers Brenda Habshush, Israel> Naomi Ogin Brisbane
Perhaps someone reading this will be familiar w/these names: Emanuel (Clive) Morris B 1907 in London was an architect in London and had 3 brothers in England. Clive married an American woman, Gladys Florence. They may have married in London, or perhaps New York, perhaps California because Clive traveled a great deal. They had a daughter Marilyn. They divorced. I found a reference to their 1933 divorce in the UK national archives website. Clive remarried Suzanne and had 3 children whose names I know. I found many, many Marilyn Morris on a popular USA people search engine. I would like to trace and connect w/Marilyn, who is my cousin. -- Kindest Regards, Ann Linder Florida USA
I found some Lewis people in Great Grimsley, but is that far from Leeds? They were Edward bottler & ?, George frames & looking glass, John shop keeper, Robert Gen. joiner fish dock Then the Hull St & Entry (?) a Jacob Lewis 82 cloths dealer (I think the 82 is the house #) N>E> Riding Yorkshire lists these Lewis people. Rev. Lewis, Amaziah, George, Hy, Jn, John, John, JH, Thomas & Thomas Christopher I don't know if this will help me or anyone else but here it is. I noticed in the London Gazette that a Morris Lev' of 9 Nile Street and 11 Back Nile Street, Leeds, had a Boot, Shoe and Slipper Maker business in at least July, 1883. As Jacob Lewis also had a Sipper business, I wonder if he was related to Morris. Not sure if Morris's surname is meant to be Levy, Lewis, Levin etc. There are some Lev's on FreeBMD. I'm sure there were a number of similar businesses, but just in case. <searching Jacob Lewis b. 1864 wife Fanny/Jane Smith b. 1864 Judi Conway, USA> Naomi Ogin Brisbane
