Hi all, I am looking for some info on the above couple - must have been born around 1775 or so. Isaac died in 1817, Deborah in 1843, they seemed to be in St Pancras and other areas of Middlesex. Isaac may have been a bottle merchant, his son Hyam was I think. He died at East St, Manchester Square, Middlesex, London They had a few children, Sarah, Solomon, Amelia, Isabella and Hyam at least. No idea of birth dates. Sarah Isaacs is my gggg grandmother and I think she died sometime between 1831 and 1841, leaving my ggg grandmother (Alice Goodman) an orphan. She had married a Solomon Goodman and had a daughter Alice (Alsea, Ailsey) in c1831. I found Alice in the 1841 census living with her Grandmother and aunts (Deborah, Amelia and Isabella). Alice went on to marry Henry Moss in 1852, they moved to Australia and then NZ. Any connections??? Many thanks Suzanne
By 1850 with the coming of the railways all over UK most likely meaning of traveller was either salesman for a firm or commercial traveller who were often away from home- if you look up 1851 census you will find they were away from home a lot and are listed wherever they were staying. I have been trying to put together some family history for a friend, and am seeking inspiration.... I can see his grandfather, Harry Cohen, A Journeyman Tailor, getting married aged 29 in Prestwich in 1912 to Cissie Bloom and have a copy of the marriage cert, which shows Harry's father as Abraham Cohen, a Fish Salesman. But try as I may, I can't find any definite record of Harry prior to 1912. There are lots of Harry Cohens, and I had really hoped to find one living with a Fish Salesman called Abraham. There are Fish Salesmen called Abraham, mainly in London, but none appear to have a son born about 1883 called Harry. The marriage record shows the address of both bride and groom as 32 Maud Street, Cheetham - but there is no record of either family at that address in the 1911 census. Is there somewhere I haven't looked ? All suggestions welcomed. Thanks. Andy Lister

Thank you so much for this piece about the Old Jewish Cemetery. The Scholar Isaac Abendana, brother of the Haham Jacob Aendana, may have been an ancestor of mine through the the Abendana line. I know he lectured at Oxford and Cambridge and wonder if there is any trace of his burial in this cemetery or if anyone knows anything about his life in Oxford. If he had any children. I only know a little so everything would be welcome, with best wishes, Louise -----Original Message----- From: Sherry in France Sent: Thursday, July 12, 2012 5:59 AM To: BRITISH-JEWRY@rootsweb.com Subject: [BRITISH-JEWRY] Jewish ancestry in Oxford This might be of interest (thanks to Paul from OFHS list for sharing it originally) http://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/9803654.Memorial_marks_city_s_old_Jewish_cemetery/ Best wishes, Sherry Landa (Oxford, UK) Our website is at www.british-jewry.org.uk We update regularly. Hello, We will both be travelling during the summer (July and August). We are looking for a relief list administrator who can stand in for us when we are not available-normally for short periods of time. Previous experience of administrating a Rootsweb list is desirable. Ability to receive a text message when we need help to run the list is also needed. Mostly you would be checking trapped messages on a daily or 48-hourly basis to ensure no genuine message is deleted in error and handling approval of subscription requests. We would not expect you to handle disputes, although you may need to use the moderation tools available-hence the preference for someone with experience of Rootsweb. Please reply directly to Sherry in the first instance. Thanks for your anticipated responses. Sherry & Jackye

Hello, I am new to this forum but have been researching various branches of my family tree for a few years now. At the moment I am concentrating on: Joseph Levy (b c1800, died before 1841) and Catherine Moses, born around 1800, Hull Yorkshire, died , Mile End 1881 I know they had five children and I have good information on four of them - if you want more I can post it, otherwise this is enough to identify them: Lipman - born c1823, died 1881 in Wellington, NZ, married to Sarah HOGGARD Frances - born c1824, died 1883 in Wellington, NZ, married to David ABRAHAM(S) 1845 Hannah - born c1827, died 1894 in Wellington NZ, married to Isaac PHILIPS 1845 Benjamin - born c1830, died 1880 in Christchurch, NZ, married to Abigail Adelaide COHEN 1851 All the above were born in London The fifth and elusive child is Henry who at some stage renamed himself Henry Levy LEWIS, born around 1828 I have found a Henry Levy LEWIS who died in Melbourne Australia in 1917 aged 88 - he came to my attention because he lists his parents on his marriage cert as Joseph and Catherine Lewis and was born in London around 1828. I have his second marriage certificate from 1892 in Melbourne which states he was made a widow in 1878, and had eight living and two deceased children at the time of his second marriage. >From his death certificate I know that his first marriage was in America, no other details about his first wife. It also states that he had been in Victoria, Aust since around 1890. He had no children with his second wife, Elizabeth COLLEY, she died in 1919 in Melbourne. I have failed to find him in the US The only other line of enquiry I have at the moment is the Jews' Hospital in Mile End - Lipman was known to have been here in 1841 (can see him in the census record and it is mentioned in his obituary) There is a Henry Levy listed also who may be the one I want - he was 13 in 1841. I have been in touch with the archivist at Norwood (which is what the Jews' Hospital eventually evolved into) and he is looking into it - they may have records showing Henry as an inmate! If anyone reading this has any useful information I would love to hear from you! Many thanks, Suzanne
