    1. [BRITISH-CONNECTIONS] Rich family in Great Britain
    2. The Rich Family Association has been running a Y-chromosome DNA project for men with the Rich/Ritch/Reich/Reach surname for a few years. We now have data on 83 men representing at least 15 distinct family lines in the US. We also have 11 unmatched participants who may represent 11 more families in the US, Jamaica and South Africa. We have been unable to make any connection between our Rich families and the UK, except for our South African Rich whose ancestor was Thomas Rich born in Davenport, England in 1707. We have been raising money to pay for DNA testing which will broaden our reach and would like to sponsor some Rich men in Britain. We are using DNA Heritage (_http://www.dnaheritage.com/_ (http://www.dnaheritage.com/) ) which operates in both England and the US. Their 43 marker test is going for $149 US when initiated through our project. I'm not sure how that translates into pounds or other currencies. If any of you have any good ideas about how we can contact more Riches in Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or South Africa, please let me know. Dick Rich in Whitman, Massachusetts, USA

    1. [BRITISH-CONNECTIONS] Response back to Allen Williams
    2. Allen Williams wrote: "How do, Pat The last Pindell (spelt like that) appears to have died in 1840 in Windsor Registration District (Berkshire), according to freeBMD. Fortunately, this is just after Civil Registration began (July 1, 1837), but this is equally unfortunate, as there is therefore no easy way of tracing this character's antecedants by this route. Mar 1840 PINDELL Sarah Windsor 6 207 It has been suggested that the name originates in Lancashire and derives from what is now Pendle Hill near Colne. This is possible, and I have found one baptism on LANOPC: 1 Aug 1613 Cathedral, Manchester, Lancashire, England Edmunde son to Hughe Pendell of Manchester plus two more "Pendle" family entries. However, if we look at www.nationaltrustnames.org.uk in 1881, "Pindell" and "Pendell" are too rare to be covered, but we see that the Pendle surname is concentrated in East Anglia, and a quick look on freeBMD for Pendle (and names like it) confirms this. But, there also seem to be enclaves around Faringdon in North Berkshire (now part of Oxfordshire) and in the "Three Choirs" area (Gloucester, Hereford and Worcester). I therefore strongly doubt the Pendle Hill theory. People named after that area are called Pendleton, after the town, not Pendle after the Hill. The name Pendleton is strongly Lancastrian but Pendle, surprisingly, isn't. But then, there is always the possibility that Pindell morphed into Pinder (there is a phonetic similarity), and Pinder is characteristically a Yorkshire name. Very confusing. No doubt you have collected as much as you can about Thomas's activities in the colonies. What he did there might be a clue as to what he did here, and that might help pin down where he came from. Similarly if you can determine why he went to Maryland, and who with, it may assist in locating him here. If he went in the 1600s, he may well have been simply seeking his fortune, or he may have been escaping something here. Unfortunately, there is no One-Name Study on Pindell, Pendle, etc., so that is not a viable route. If you have not done so already, I would post a message on the boards (if they exist) for Norfolk and Suffolk, and maybe Essex, to see if there is anyone with information about the Pindell/Pendell surname around the time of Thomas's emigration. I would also try the Berkshire site (if there is one, again) specifically to see if anyone can shed light on the "last of the Pindells" lass above who died in Windsor in 1840. What you should certainly do, is go to www.freeBMD.org.uk and search for "All Types" of entry from Sep 1837 to (say) 1960. You will see that (particularly in the earlier years) there is a lot of Faringdon, Abingdon, Wantage and Reading events (although there are quite a lot of East Anglian ones, too, but very few from "up north"). All four named places are in (old) Berkshire. Since 1974, the first three have been in Oxfordshire (Vale of the White Horse District). My bet is that your man may well have come from round here. Try the Berkshire and maybe Oxfordshire lists to see if anyone is looking into Pendells from this area at around the relevant date. I don't know how well up you are on British history in the 17th century, but that is when we had our Civil War. An extremely bloody affair, it could well have prompted a reasonably well-off individual to cash in his chips and get out of the country. The area around Oxford was staunchly Royalist (it is where Charles I had his wartime capital - London was staunchly Parliamentarian). If your chap was of Puritan inclination, he wouldn't have found it easy during or in the years running up to the war. If he was a Royalist, he'd have been fine, but with the Parliamentary victory, that would have changed. Either way, he may have decided to get out at some stage of the proceedings. I hope this is of some help. Apologies if I am teaching grandma how to suck eggs. Best wishes Allen Sale Cheshire" ============================================================ Thanks, Allen, and no problem!
