Hi Andrew & Jenny I also had 2 people with the same name in my family tree. In this case they were two Fredericks. One was Frederick Humphrey (my gggraandfather) and the other just Frederick. We had families for both of them, so I looked up the appropriate census in the hope of disproving the second one and found them listed as Humphrey & Frederick, so I guess in some cases this rule dosn't apply, so it may be best to check it out thoroughly Good luck Jenny
