My guncle, Benjamin Saville, was born in Wheatley, Ovenden, England on Apr 7, 1843. I am unable to locate Wheatley on any current map. Could this be a town that has been renamed or am I over looking it? Any assistance will be appreciated. Paul Saville
Wheatley and Ovenden have been swallowed up by modern day HALIFAX. OVENDEN appears on most road maps, just North of Halifax, on the A629. It is shown probably because it was larger and more important that Wheatley, or because it lies on the major road from Halifax via Queensbury to Bradford. To find WHEATLEY itself you need a larger scale map, at least OS 1 to 50,000 scale, which shows Wheatley about 1 Km. from OVENDEN, just South of East. I find www.streetmap.co.uk a very useful tool for locating place names. It rarely lets you down. If you click on the link below it will take you direct to a modern day map showing Wheatley and Ovenden. http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?grid2mapi?x=407500&y=426500&title=S treetMap+-+Wheatley,+Calderdale+[City/Town/Village]&back=~&url=~&arrow=N&nol ocal=N&bimage=~&zoom=0&largeuk=N&adkey=~,GRIDCONVERT&searchType=3&value=Whea tley Another useful site for map data in www.multimap.com. Personally I don't think it is as good as streetmap.co.uk, it found Ovenden, but not Wheatley, which Streetmap did! Both maps will even find street names (provided the streets still exist today). -----Original Message----- From: PSaville@msn.com [mailto:PSaville@msn.com] Sent: 13 August 2001 03:35 To: BRIT-SURNAMES-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [BRITNAMES] Wheatley, Ovenden My guncle, Benjamin Saville, was born in Wheatley, Ovenden, England on Apr 7, 1843.
