Help, Help, Please!!! For the first time in 25 years of research I have succeeded in getting one of our US family lines across the big pond to the UK, finally. ;-) But not being familiar at all with some of the surname naming conventions I have a couple of real basic beginner questions for this group that I have not been able to find the answers to. I have run across numerous surnames like "Beauchamp" that seem to migrate in one generation to "De Beauchamp" or "Clifford" to "De Clifford," for instance. Just what is the significance of the "De" and what does it mean and/or indicate in a persons name? Is this "De" considered part of the surname or what? I'm trying to get this entered into ye ole genealogy program but I want to make sure I properly identify the surname here. Sorry for asking this beginner type question but I am just not familiar with these older British naming conventions and I have been unable to locate anything on the net or in the new British genealogy research book "Ancestrial Trials."
