Hi all, I need some help from the experts out there interpreting my Grandparents marriage certificate. It is confusing but here goes, my grandfather went through his married life as James GOOCH however when I reviewed the marriage certificate it said: James Cyril VAUGHAN age 22 years & fathers name James Cyril VAUGHAN then handwritten on the side was the following statement "In entry No 24 Col 2 before James Cyril Vaughan read James Gooch otherwise, Col 3 for "22 years" read 20 years Col 7 for James Cyril Vaughan read James Gooch Corrected on the 19th August 1922 by me A G Prater Registrar In the presence of James Gooch, Elsie Mary Gooch the parties married a statutory declaration as to the facts having been made by them" I would like your opinions on what this means, it looks like a simple name change but as the age at the time was 22 for Vaughan & 20 for Gooch that doesn't make sense to me. Hi Bob Have you looked at the National Archives Canada site on Home Children? there are interesting pieces on some of the children, letters they wrote, marriages, etc. Worth a try http://www.archives.ca/02/020110_e.html You might be better to key it in on your search engine, as the _ gets covered with the underlining. Dear Bob Kent, You will probably be able to find more information out about William than you are aware. Have you tried to locate his birth certificate? Did you know that the 1891 UK Census goes on-line as from next year? Have you looked at Parish Records? Any of the above should inform you of William's parentage (if it was known at the time). A subsequent search of the register of death certificates should reveal whether his parent died when he was young. As you suggested, there at least two towns called Ware in the UK, one in Hertfordshire and one in Kent (see http://www.multimap.com). Regards, Andrew Tullett. Family members said my ggrandfather was born in Ware, Kent County. I thought it was in Hertfordshire, too. I started out looking there and couldn't find anything. I asked some more questions from my relatives and they said that he was born in the Hamlet of Ware in Kent County. The area was in the parish of Ash, according to old maps. It is located between Sandwich and Canterbury. Rumours say he was a bastard child of royalty and that his parents died in an accident, so he was sent to an orphanage. Another rumour is that his parents died and he went to live with a spinster aunt, whom he didn't like and put himself into an orphanage. We may never know. We know he was sent sealed letters from England, which my relatives felt were royal seals, but he destroyed them without opening them. I did find a William Kent who was sent to Strattford, Ontario in 1907 on the S.S. Tunisian, which may be him. He departed from Liverpool on July 25, 1907 and arrived with Mr. Merry's party to Quebec on August 2, 1907. Annie McPherson probably was the sending party, since Mr. Merry was her brother-in- law. I get a little more information from each one who sends mail to me. Thankyou for your interest. Bob Kent
