Everyone we know of who has a > surname spelled like ours - SUTLIVE - is a descendant of Joseph Sutlive. I > have not been able to find anyone in the UK with a surname spelled the same > as ours, although there are many similar. Do any of you know of anyone in the > UK with a surname spelled like ours? The BT phone disk (which does not include ex-directory number holders) lists no SUTLIVEs. There is one entry for SUTLEFF, and quite a few for SUTLIFF. I recommend the genuki search engine at www.genuki.org.uk/search.html . This searches records listed on family history society sites, and also all the county surname interest lists (SILs). Interestingly - and probably significantly - there is no mention on any SIL. The one entry is Sutlive wife of Robert aged 60, 1695..83 at http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/northowram/burialsOH.html a listings of burials in North Owram, Yorkshire. Trying SUTLIFF, though, gives several references - and some are also in North Owram, showing it was a variant even then. -- Wendy Archer [email protected] Marlow, Bucks, UK List owner [email protected]

    1. [BRITNAMES] GILKES and PUMMELL One Name Studies
    2. David Smith
    3. Hello, My name is David Smith and I live in Yorkshire, England. My interests centre around two One Name Studies that I currently run. The first concerns the surname PUMMELL and variations. There appear to be three roots to this family, one originating in Norfolk and stretching to the USA down one line and via London and Bristol to Birmingham, England on another. The third line, my own connection originates in the Oxfordshire/Berkshire area of England. The earliest reference that I have to the name is about 1600. The second study is on the surname GILKES and variations. I have built up a number of databases including parish register extracts (4,850), census returns (2,410), births from the FRC indexes between 1837 and 1957 (3,996), marriages from the FRC indexes between 1837 and 1924(1,595) as well as indexes of wills and references from Australia and Canada. If anyone out there requires help with these names please contact me and I will freely give my help. Equally if anyone has any information on these subjects I would be pleased to hear from them. Happy hunting, David Smith e-mail address:- [email protected] Oxfordshire Family History Soc. ref. 2876 Berkshire Family History Soc. ref. 3427 Guild Of One Name Studies ref. 2929 Names researched GILKES and PUMMELL

    1. [BRITNAMES] WOODTHORPE surname
    2. Kathy Martinez
    3. I am new to the list and am hoping find surname connections to my maternal line of WOODTHORPE relatives. My great-grandfather was apparently living at 6 Grassendale Park, Gartston prior to 1881, and his family WAS living there for the 1881 census. The surname for the family is Woodthorpe. My grandfather is Thomas and his parents were William and Mary. His siblings were: John, William James, Louisa, Mary J., Elizabeth, and possibly Sarah J. There is another daughter Anna Maria who must not have been at home for the 1881 census. The older children were born in Liverpool and the last one, Elizabeth, was born in Garston. William Woodthorpe/married/52/b. Carlton, Suffolk/Mariner Mary/wife/45/b. Scotland John/b. 1855 Thomas William James/son/20/unmarr/b. Liverpool/ General Labourer Louisa/dau/12/b. WOODTHORPE 23 unmarried b. Liverpool Cook/servant 45 James St., Garston, Lancashire Mary E Woodthorpe marr 20 b. Garston, Lancashire Flatman wife William James, Thomas and Mary are all listed as christened at Vauxhall on Batch number P019931 Louisa at St. Peter, Liverpool on Batch number P020948 John christened on 16 Dec 1855 on Batch number P020943 and Anna Maria on 19 Sep 1859 William Woodthorpe, father of the brood above, was born to William and Sarah, christened at Carlton Colville, Suffolk - 4 June 1827 Batch number C131711. His sister Louisa Shaddelow Woodthorpe was christened 17 march 1824 on batch number C131691 William's father, also named William was married to Sarah Shaddelow 13th June 1814 at Thurlton, Norfolk on Batch number 7114417. There is another: Annie Maria Woodthorpe /23/ spinster / dau of John Woodthorpe, labourer, 50 James St. was married to John Hughes/23/bach/ crane driver/ son of Joseph Hughes/42/blksmith/42 James St on 24 Feb 1912. I suspect that one or more of this group may have been ancestor(s) of Colin Woodthorpe, soccer athlete, born Ellesmere Port. My great-grandfather Thomas moved to Buffalo, NY by 1890 and was listed as a ship carpenter at that time. I have been unable to track him. Many segments of this branch have been very elusive. I am hoping to find out who Thomas worked for in Garston area so that I can track him. I am also hopeful to find any living relatives to this bunch as they may be able to give me some information. Sorry for the long message, but I have already tried to post to the list three times. Please excuse my lack of brevity. Hopefully, SKS will be able to fill in some gaps! Gratefully yours, Kathy HYDE Martinez Brooksville, Florida, USA [email protected]
