    1. [BRITNAMES] Winskill/Morpeth
    2. Mark & Marian
    3. Hello everyone I am searching for any information on the surnames Morpeth or Winskill, from Northumberland from about 1730 to about 1850. My g-g-g grandfather was Thomas Morpeth/Winskill, who was born at Hexham 12th January 1800, son of John Winskill. Thomas married Mary Forster on 20 July 1822 under the name Winskill. He was killed in a mining accident at Derwent Lead Mines (Hunstanworth) on 17th March 1864, and is buried at St Marys Church Yard, Blanchland under the name Morpeth. I am trying to find out which was his ancestral surname, and why the change came about. I have found a marriage between John Winskill and Elizabeth Morpeth at Allendale on 2 December 1799, this is the only link I have found between the Winskill and Morpeth surname. Any information on these surnames would be greatly received. Regards Mark (Consett Co. Durham)

    3. My G G G G Uncle, Samuel Sproston CHALLENER, was for a time a member of the City of London police Force. This was the first police force and quiet small. They have a museum at Wood Street Police Office, 37 Wood Street, LONDON EC2P 2NQ and I found them very helpful. You may well find they have your ancestors record of service and number on file. 1. [BRITNAMES] Panting
    2. Mark & Marian
    3. Hello I am tracing my paternal family tree the surname being Panting. My great grandfather (Thomas Panting) was born in Consett, Co. Durham in 1871, he married (or lived with as husband and wife) a Jane Stobbs who was born in Dipton, Co, Durham in 1876/1877. Their children were all as far as I know born at her families home in Consett. I can not find any record of a marriage, or a death for Jane, whom I am told died in the early 1900's. Thomas's father was a Charles Panting born in Fairford, Gloucester in 1826/1827, he married a Phillis Smith born in Ebchester, nr. Consett Co. Durham in 1840/1841. I would be most grateful if anyone with information on this family would contact me. Regards Marian

    1. [BRITNAMES] Re: HERDSFIELD family
    2. Wendy & Derek Rogers
    3. Hallo I am hoping that someone will recognise the name HERDSFIELD and help me a little with the research. I believe they came from the Derbyshire area, as I have a record of Joseph HERDSFIELD, marrying Mary BUXTON in Derby in 1740. Joseph died in 1769 and Mary in 1788, and they are buried in Bakewell Churchyard. There is also mention on the gravestone of a son, Joseph, who died in 1785 in Wincanton. There was a daughter, Ann, who married John WILLSON, and they are buried near Joseph and Mary. There was also a daughter, Pinninah, christened in 1752. The family may have moved to London, because I then have a family of Herdsfields in the Aldersgate area, George marrying Mary STEVENS in 1783, and Mary HERDSFIELD marrying William PIERCE in 1782. I also have a Penninah HERDSFIELD marrying a William ATHILL in London in 1802. I have information about a Joseph HERDSFIELD who was a clerk to quite a wealthy man, and who gave evidence in a Civil case involving money, and who I assume was the son who died in 1785. The family seem to have been well educated, as they could all write very well, including the daughters, and George Herdsfield was a bookseller and stationer in the Aldersgate area. His uncle, Silvanus Chirm, was also a bookseller and stationer, and when Silvanus retired George took over his business. George and Mary had a number of children, amongst them Thomas, who became a City Police Officer very early on. He was made a Freeman of the City of London in 1827 by Redemption, and he is quoted as being a 'Police Officer' then. Thomas married someone called Sarah, but I do not know her surname, and I cannot find their marriage, though I believe it might have been in the Islington area. I cannot find the christening of their children, Thomas, Ann Eliza Oldrinnie and Mary Ann, though I believe this may also have been in Islington. Ann is my great grandmother, and I would dearly love to find her birth, which I believe was in about 1830. I would also like to find the marriage of Thomas and Sarah. If anyone can help me I would be very grateful. I have been looking for these missing links for some years, and still feel that one day I will find them. If there is someone who recognises any of the names, and who is researching the same ones I would love to hear from them. 3. I'm not actually a BRILL researcher but did once live nearby to the pretty village of BRILL in Buckinghamshire which was once the furthest outpost of the Metropolitan Line of London's Underground. It was a custom years ago that if the father and often the mother of a child (usually a foundling) were unknown it may be given as it's surname the name of the parish possibly BRILL! Hope this may help you. Christopher Still looking for: CHALLENER SPROSTON TREMBLE SCOPES STEVENS-BURT GOLDING (East London) MANNING (18th C. Cheshire)

    3. Hi I am new to this list and am researching the Norton family. I have followed my father's line back to 1820 when John NORTON and Sarah NORTON (nee NORDEN) came to South Africa with the 1820 Settlers. Please can anyone help me with databases or researchers who might help me locate John's parents. I have looked on the LDS microfiche and there does not seem to be a record linking John with any one. No marriage certificate for John or Sarah either. I have managed to link up with someone related to me through the NORDEN side, but she can't help me with my side. Thanks in anticipation. 3. In my post yesterday I wasn't properly specific about the parish registers. I have collected ONLY the references to WHITEHURST, not to any other families in Stoke-on-Trent and neighboring parishes. I'll be happy to share with Whitehurst researchers, but others are out of luck. The registers are in the Society of Genealogists, London, among other places far from me. 2. Kathleen Much
    3. I'm looking for 17th-century WHITEHURSTs, probably in the area around Stoke-upon-Trent. I've found a bunch of them in parish registers for Stoke-upon-Trent, Newcastle Under Lyme, and Trentham but have not yet checked surrounding parishes. My James has not yet surfaced. Most of today's WHITEHURSTs still live in the area. If anyone can shed light on James WHITEHURST b 1639, who emigrated to America and married Sarah GOLDSMITH, please let me know. I'll be glad to email the extracts from the registers to anyone who has ancestors from those parishes. Kathleen Much [email protected]

    1. [BRITNAMES] Longbottom
    2. Harvey L. Bottoms
    3. I am researching the Longbottom name. My earliest known ancestor is William Longbottom. His father may have been an Edmund Longbottom, master of the ship Leviathan which most likely sailed out of Bristol in the year 1708 to Virginia and Maryland. It had a sister ship the Alathea that sailed with her. I have record that another William Longbottom, probably the son of William Longbottom, is shown to be a captain of a ship in Virginia in 1762. The two seaman combined leads me to believe that my Longbottom ancestors were sailors. Another Longbottom that I haven't been able to place is Henry, who was mustered for service for two months in 1729 who stayed in Virginia. I understand that Yorkshire was the primary location for the Longbottom families. Does anyone have any records of Longbottom seamen.
