--=======1CA12254======= Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed; x-avg-checked=avg-ok-773E1C37 Greetings from a newcomer to genealogy and to this list. My father's line is Piland, variant spellings are Pylant, Pilant, Pyland, etc., sometimes also beginning with a B. Apparently there were two brothers who emigrated to Isle of Wight County, Virginia, USA, in the 1600's. It is thought by various family researchers that we all descend from these two brothers. Story goes, too, that as far back as anyone has the name is in Bristol in the late 1500's. So I thought to inquire whether anyone on this list might be familiar with that name or any of its variations, and would be able to point me in some direction on where to look. I'm just beginning my inquiries into my English lines, so am learning English history and geography at a crash pace. I haven't really any clues other than "Bristol". But there seem to be a lot of possibilities for counties in which the name might appear, so I thought to inquire here and see what you all would suggest for places to look. The only thing I know about the name in England, personally, is that it appears in a Sherlock Holmes story. So I'd be pleased to hear any other input that any might have, also to the derivation of the name, if anyone has any ideas, and so on. Thanks much. jo jo harper mailto:jharper@neb.rr.com --=======1CA12254=======--

I am searching for any information on the families of my husband's great grandfather, George Frearson Wain. His father was William Wain, b. 1854 or 1855 in Heather, Leicestershire. His mother was Margaret Ann Hall, b. 1864 or 1865 in Derbyshire. Both immigrated to America sometime before 1890 and settled in Cambria Co. Pennsylvania. I know it is not much to go on, but I would appreciate hearing from anyone with ancestors with these surnames living in the same areas at that time. Thanks, Chris Whalen

Does anyone out there have a ROSS family that may have moved from Illinois and/or Missouri to Minnesota via covered wagon in the mid to late 1800's? I'm looking for the family of my grgr grandmother who was born enroute. I have no parents' names. Her name was Martha Sophronia Ethalinda Ross. She married George Shingledecker from Washington Co., Minnesota. She had a brother, Charley, probably much younger and possibly a sister, Emma. Sonja
List Administrator - please note..... In response to my 2 postings earlier today I received replies directly to my mail box from geniebug1@telusplanet.net with the message: "Take a look to the attachment" the attachments were called "Fun.TXT.pif & Humor.TXT.pif".......I am wary of this.....and did not open them - any suggestions or insights - other than hit the "delete" key, which is what i have done.
The file you received was probably a worm/virus usually sent without the sender even knowing their computer is infected. It is best to never open unexpected attachments and keep your virus protection programme up to date. Can someone living in Leeds possibly advise me if there is a business operating at no. 11 Skinner Lane, or if it is a residence? I would like to correspond with the current owners. I have discovered that my grandfather was born at this address in 1873 and would like to know if it is possible to trace previous owners. When I did a search on http://uk8.multimap.com/map/places.cgi and entered the address the map plus what appears to be business listings appeared so I am assuming that this area is now a CBD. Don't know if it will assist or not. My G-Grandmother was Elizabeth ABBOTT born 26 Sept 1866 at Gloucester Street, Lambeth, London. She married Thomas Joseph HATTON in 1889. Her parents were John ABBOTT born abt 1836 and Elizabeth LAMBERT born abt 1834. Both of whom, I believe, were local.
