Alfred Charles Bernard Lovell was born at Oldland Common 13th Aug 1913 so would have been 99 next week. On the local news on Tuesday evening there was film of him I think from the 1960s opening the school in Oldland Common which is named after him and they still use the telescope he is always connected with as the school emblem. My great grandmother was Susannah Lovell b 1842 in Staplehill and always wondered if there was a family connection to him as its good to have a famous person on your tree. The surname is concentrated to the east and north east of the city with the biggest concentration being in the Staple Hill area of Mangotsfield. Back in the 1980/90s I collected numerous Lovell family trees from contacts all over the world and was able to connect most together with a total of over 1200 names. Unfortunately some people appear more than once as not everyone agreed on the same family connections!! Sir Bernard appears on one of the trees and his parents were Gilbert LOVELL and Emily Laura ADAMS who married Sept Q 1910 in Bristol. Gilbert's parents were Charles LOVELL and Julia MAY who married 1875 at Bitton and in 1881 were living at "Oldland Common Grocers Shop". Sir Bernard's great grandparents were Samuel LOVELL and Ann FUDGE who married 1843 at Bitton The tree continues into the early 1700 where there is a "possible" connection to my tree.
