Hi Chris The father of Sir Bernard Lovell's great grandparents (Samuel Lovell who married Ann Fudge at Bitton in 1843) was a John Lovell. My great, great grandparents were Charles Willmott of Cadbury Heath who married Fanny Lovell. They also married in 1843 but at Holy Trinity, St Philips, Bristol. She was the daughter of Thomas Lovell who moved to Oldland parish from Mangotsfield parish at the beginning of the 1800s. Charles and Fanny Willmott ran the grocer's shop in Cadbury Heath. At least one of Charles and Fanny's sons married a Lovell. My mother who was born in Cadbury Heath always said we were related to Sir Bernard Lovell, Astronomer Royal. Bernice I have details of your Fanny Lovell and family on the large Lovell tree but don't know if the info came from you. We were in contact as far back as 1988 about another surname but I don't have your Lovell interests listed. However we have been in contact several times more recently so perhaps that is where I got the info. I have Sir Bernard's GG Grandparents John Lovell and Hester Somerill and on a separate tree that line continues another four generations to a William and Ester Lovell born about 1650 but have doubts how accurate the earlier data is. Looking at my list of people's interest it is noticeable that suddenly in 1989 there is a lot of interest in Lovell from New Zealand. I think there was a lot of interest in family history around then because the country had an important anniversary. Most of the people in New Zealand named Lovell are descended from a Benjamin Lovell born 1808 in Mangotsfield and his brother James b 1816 who emigrated in 1841. Hi again Chris I'm afraid the tree that I have for Sir Bernard Lovell stops at John Lovell who married Hester Somerill at Christchurch in Bristol in 1815 and who lived at Oldland, but I don't have the details of the generations further back. My ancestor, Frances Lovell (baptised at Hanham and Oldland Chapelry in 1820 aged 3) was living with Sir Bernard's Fudge and Lovell ancestors in 1841 in Oldland parish and she married Charles Willmott in 1843 who ran the grocer's shop in Cadbury Heath where my mother was born, and one of their twin sons also called Charles Willmott married an Emma Lovell (b.1865) from Sir Bernard's tree. Sir Bernard was born in Rose Cottage, which was built in1780, and which is almost opposite the village hall and his father Gilbert Lovell was church secretary of the Oldland Methodist church in West Street. I think Gilbert ran a radio and cycle shop in West Street.
