Hi Chris I've got a Lovell tree here wiith Sir Bernard's ancestors on it so I'll dig it out as soon as I can and see who preceeds John Lovell and Hester Somerill. I was in touch with a cousin of Sir Bernard who lived in Scotland but he unfortunately has passed away too. I remember the sudden surge in interest from the New Zealand Lovells and we may have picked up the postings from Family Tree magazine or maybe the Bristol and Avon Family History Society journals. How I used to look forward to those magazines and then going through the printed lists of surname interests from people all around the world. Those were the days when everything was done by post to contact those people and then there were numerous visits to Record Offices, Libraries to view the censuses as they were eventually became open to the public every 10 years once they became 100 years old and to be able to view the actual parish register entries was a joy. Researchers of today have it easy as so much information is now online. She died Abt 1736. I have names dates of all their children but absolutely nothing on Mary. This thread set me thinking: The oldest half brother of my greatgrandmother was Lovell Latham. He was the first child of Charles Latham and Susannah Lovell. (Charles had 13 or 14 children; 5 by the second marriage. I am descended from the very youngest daughter) Susannah was born in 1836, the daughter of Charles Lovell born 1791 and Frances - I have no idea where, but the family was born and grew up in Soho. (London) I suspect that is also where Charles and Susannah married around 1857. I shall look that up tomorrow - that should be simple enough - it is a line I have not previously checked out. But what the family origins further back were I have no idea. This research was done by a senior cousin in 1937 so is lacking in certain details! but just to add a list of Lovells which may help there were, with dates of birth Chas H V Lovell 1827 – Rebecca Lovell 1829 – Thomas Lovell 1831 – Susannah Lovell 1836 – Edward Lovell 1841 – William Lovell 1843 As I said, I will do the obvious research tomorrow - it is over 33 C here (West France) so a spell inside after going to the pool will not go amiss! Jean I could not see any of the names you mention in the series of Bristol area Lovell trees I have. They contain 32 Charles Lovells which makes it difficult to identify the correct one so it is much easier identify a person using the wife's full name. However you mention your family living in London so may have no Bristol connection. According to the 1881 census surname profiler Bristol and Northampton are the two areas in the country where the name is most common.
