    3. Hi Listers, Like many other family history researchers, I have gaps in my knowledge of the lives of some of my relatives who lived in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. One of these elusive relatives is my 2x great-uncle, Samuel VOKES, who was born c.1870 at Temple Cloud, Cameley, Somerset. He was the second son of my 2x great-grandmother, Angel Dore VOKES (nee VEATER formerly PAYNE), and her second husband William VOKES. At the time of the 1871 and 1881 censuses, Samuel was living in Temple Cloud with his family, but by the time of the 1891 census, Samuel had moved away from Temple Cloud and his whereabouts are unknown. I thought he was in the parish of Llangeinor by 1895 as that year the birth of his first child, Edgar William VOKES, was registered in Bridgend, Glamorgan. Years ago, when I wrote up my notes on Samuel VOKES, I noted that a marriage for a Samuel VOKES was registered at Clutton in the March quarter of 1894. It seemed unlikely to me, then, that this was the marriage of my 2x great-uncle as the 1901 Llangeinor census shows that his wife was born in Ebbw Vale, Monmouthshire. However, nowadays, I know that even an unlikely reference may be the one that's needed. Putting "Samuel Vokes""Langeinor" into a Google search brought up Samuel's marriage on 1894 marriage in HIGH LITTLETON MARRIAGES and BANS 1599-1957 & INDEX http://www.highlittletonhistory.org.uk/transcriptions0905/HLMarriages1599to1957&Indx.pdf The marriage record shows that bachelor, Samuel VOKES, was a 24-year-old labourer of Llangeinor Glamorganshire and that his father was William VOKES, labourer. Samuel's bride was spinster, Annie BATT, a 30-year-old domestic servant, whose father was George BATT, deceased, with no occupation given. Witnesses were William John VOKES, whom I know was Samuel's brother, and Elizabeth PAYNE. So, in many cases, the information is out there if only we know where to look. Sometimes just a few words put into a search can lead to all kinds of information not known before. Josephine --
