    3. Great ta, interesting , that last Joseph GILLAM at the Key, otherwise The Quay ties in with well with what I know of the GILLAM / KIFT connection in merchant trade and customs. George KIFT’s address was at Lewins Mead in 1795 and from 1797 he was at Head of The Quay. I do have this picture in my head of them all knowing one another and sitting in some gentleman’s club smoking cigars and talking abt customs and excise together!!! According to records I know Thomas Kift married Phoebe Gillam in Dec 1786 at St Nicholas Bristol, then in Jun 1788 he apprenticed son George whilst residing in Cork Ireland, returning to Bristol to father children between 1789 – 1803. Maybe just a trade visit to Ireland? or was it family? Hi Amanda, Thanks for your response. James SKETCHLEY, Broker and Auctioneer, was at 27 Small Street, Bristol in 1775. There are four people called GILLAM listed in Sketchley's Bristol Directory of 1775. The one at 11 Small Street doesn't have a forename. > Ancestry has a ref to the 1775 Sketchley entry for Benj Gillam, which > notes his address as 19 Dove Street, Bristol. The GILLAM at 19 Dove Street was Cornelius GILLAM, book keeper. I mentioned the Jos. GILLAM who was a tide waiter at 5 Bloomsbury Court, but there was also a Joseph GILLAM, carpenter and earthenware shop, at 1 on the Key.
