Dear List, Is there anyone on this list that can do a lookup for me please. My GGGrandparents were John Smith and Hannah Gregory, both from Midsomer Norton. My GGrandfather was William Smith born 1811 and he had a brother Richard born in 1813.Some time ago I found a Richard born 1813 from MN marrying a Mary in Upton Scudamore in Wiltshire abt 1834.I don't seem to be able to find this again for some reason or other.I do have Richard and wife Mary on the 1841 census that is mine but I would like to find out where they married so I can obtain the church record. They were Wesleyan. Would it be possible for somebody to do a lookup for me please and would there be anybody on the list that is connected to this family. Hi Elaine, FreeReg (www.freereg.org.uk) has the baptism of both William and Richard (plus a couple of other siblings) at St John the Baptist, Midsomer Norton. The 1841 Census has Richard and Mary living with John and Hannah in Midsomer Norton with two children. Richard is a coal miner. The 1851 Census has Richard and his family living in Paulton. Mary is shown as being born in High Littleton and Richard is still a coal miner. Midsomer Norton, Paulton and High Littleton are all in close proximity to one another. I think it very unlikely that the marriage you found in Upton Scudamore is the correct one as it is so far from the location of both families. However I cannot find a more suitable one in North Somerset prior to 1837. Their son, Sydney, was baptised at Paulton, Holy Trinity on 2 Dec 1838. BathBMD (http://www.bathbmd.org.uk/) has the birth registration of a "son of Richard" SMITH at Batheaston (a little way away - I would have expected it to be Clutton District) with the mother's maiden name as ALLEN. However as it was not compulsory to register births until the 1870s this may be a red herring. It was not uncommon for marriages to take place in Bristol (for various reasons) but I can find nothing in the BAFHS CDs. High Littleton register transcriptions can be found at http://www.highlittletonhistory.org.uk/ but without knowing Mary's maiden name any baptism record cannot be found. Much of this you may already know but I hope it gives you some food for thought.
