Hi Listers, There has been mention of the link between Wales and Bristol in the 19th century. There is reference to people from Wales and the Welsh language in Matthew's Bristol Directory of 1793-4, which may be of interest to some listers: 'In Bristol there are people of several different countries, languages and religions; it receives large colonies from Wales, Ireland, Scotland, America, Gloucestershire, Somersetshire, Devonshire and most parts of England and the world, so that a general characteristic of its inhabitants cannot be given .... The languages spoken commonly, are English, Welsh and Irish; and there is every dialect of English used here that is known in England.' Josephine
