Bristol is a City and County in in its own right. Elizabeth Sarah STRATFORD, the daughter of Edmund and Elizabeth, was baptized, at the age of 17 weeks, on 6th. May 1810 at the church of St. Philip & St. Jacob, Bristol so it is likely that she was born in that Bristol parish. At that time, the county of Somerset was on the other side of Bristol's River Avon. 3. I've wondered if Bristol had been in Somerset. Thank you. This is the way it was written in my grandmother's family Bible. We'll never know how it was that she thought that, I guess. Grandma was the only daughter and her mother was older when Grandma was born. Oh, the questions we would ask NOW that we didn't even know we had when we were younger. Most of us are too busy learning to live life when we are younger to even think of asking these questions. My grandmothers both died within a couple of years of my own marriage. And our children are too busy to really pay attention to what I am learning. The cycle of life... Adminstratively parts of it have "belonged" to Gloucestershire and Somerset, the former north of the Avon, the latter south of the river. Bedminster, for example, was officially Somerset although also being known as Bristol. Various assignments were made at various periods for various purposes. It's no wonder people are confused about where they live, especially if they are not true Bristolians. :) -- Dave Stiles http://www.about-bristol.co.uk http://www.bristolinformation.co.uk http://www.moonrakers.org.uk http://www.stiles-genealogy.co.uk
