    3. Hello Listers I have decided to give Emmanuel Harris and rest for a while and concentrate on his wife Susan’s family. Susan SHEPPARD was born about 1830 in Mangotsfield. She married Emmanuel HARRIS in 1854. He ‘disappeared’ and she married James Hale in 1870 describing herself as a widow. She died in 1900 at Bristol Workhouse, Eastville. I have a copy of her Death Certificate and the informant was my great grandmother Alice Power (nee Harris). Her father was John SHEPPARD a mason born in Mangotsfield about 1806. There were two John SHEPPARDS born in Mangotsfield around that time and I don’t know which one he was! Consequently I am unable to trace back any further at present. John SHEPPARD married Latio (variously spelled latio, Latia, Lettia) in 1824 at St. James Church (was this Bristol or Mangotsfield. The B&AFHS Marriage Index gives the number 312 172 514. They are described OTP. The 1841 Census shows John and Latia (another spelling) living in Mangotsfield Street, Mangotsfield with their children, including Susan Sheppard. The 1851 Census shows Latia but no Susan and no John. Latia describes herself as married. I can find no record of the deaths of either John or Latia Sheppard (or Shepherd) and no mention of them in any later Census records. I believe that Latio Tanner was the daughter of Edward Tanner and Elizabeth Howell both of Mangotsfield. I would appreciate any assistance that would lead me to fill in the gaps of my research and perhaps extend further back. Kind Regards Millie

I wondered if the first name of the bride was really Lettice or Letitia. I looked up her possible baptism and found that Lettuce TANNER, daughter of Edward and Elizabeth, was baptized on 25th. October 1807 at Mangotsfield, GLS. So it looks like her name could have been Lettice, but was spelt Lettuce in the baptism record. Two other children with the same parents, Peter and Jane, were also baptized on the same day. Josephine

Hi Millie, If you haven't already found Susan SHEPPARD in the 1851 census, a possible match in the 1851 Bristol census could be Susan SHEPHERD (sic), who was 21 and born in Mangotsfield. This Susan SHEPHERD was a servant in the household of William BARTLEY in Picton Street, St. Andrew's, Bristol. Josephine

Hi Millie, As John SHEPPARD was a mason perhaps, by 1851, he had gone to South Wales for work. Ian's 2x great-grandfather, who was born in Hanham, GLS, was a mason and he went to Monmouthshire, with his family, and was there for some years before returning to Hanham. I had a look for John SHEPPARD in an 1851 Glamorgan census index, but had no result. I also had a look for him in an 1851 census index for Trevethin and in an 1851 index for Aberystruth, both in Monmouthshire, without any result. He may have been elsewhere in Monmouthshire, though, at the time of the 1851 census. Josephine
