Thinking of the large numbers of people living in Bedminster, I've had a look to see how many there were in the mid 19th century. In my resources, I have found that the population of Bedminster was 17,862 in 1841 and 22,345 in 1861. I haven't been able to find a figure for 1831, but there might be one if I looked deep enough. Perhaps one of our listers knows the population for 1831. Bernice mentioned the industries in the area. I know that there were several collieries in the parish in 1850. These included the Malaga Vale Colliery run by Reynolds, Sidney Brothers, Seaman and Challenger and Bedminster North Side Colliery run by Sidney Brothers, Goulstone and Seaman. In 1850, there were also considerable tanneries in the neighbourhood, while Hazard & Lock were iron founders at East Street. -- Josephine Jeremiah www.ianandjo.dsl.pipex.com
