Hi everyone, I am looking for the mother of Ellen Taylor, she was born around 1834, I think in Bristol. Her father was Thomas Taylor cabinet maker. She married John Ashton in 1856 her address is shown as either Wilder Street or Milder Street Bristol. I am also looking for John (born about 1834)parents I have no information of either parent but John had a son George Henry Ashton b 1858. Many thanks Skoula.

In Gordon Beavington's transcription of the 1851 Bristol St. James census, widower, Thomas TAYLOR, 42, and his children, Ellen, 19, Henry 16, and Mary Ann, 11, were all recorded as being born in Barnstaple. This looks a likely match: John ASHTON, son of George and Ann, was born on 27th. April 1833 and baptized on 2nd. February 1837 at the church of St. James, Bristol. Abode was St. James and father's occupation was cordwainer. This baptism is included in the B & A FHS Bristol Diocese Baptismal Registers Vols. 1 to 7 Index & Transcripts 1813-1837. http://www.bafhs.org.uk/shop/bapt.htm Josephine -- Josephine Jeremiah http://www.ianandjo.dsl.pipex.com

Wilder Street is still in existence and it's not far from Eugene Street, where the ASHTON family was living in 1881. Here's a snippet about the origin of the name of Wilder Street. Veronica Smith, in 'Street Names of Bristol: Their Origins and Meanings' (2nd. edition 2002), noted that land in this vicinity was owned by Peter Wilder. Hi Skoula According to the 1851 census Ellen was born in Barnstaple Devon as was her father Thomas who is shown as a Widower. In 1841 the census shows his wife to be a Mary. Thomas is possibly the Thomas baptised 10 Jun 1805 son of Nicholas and Betty Taylor at St Peter Barnstaple Devon (FreeReg). Ellen has two siblings a Henry b abt 1835 and Mary Ann b abt 1840 both born Barnstaple Devon. Hi Skoula John Ashton looks as though he was born in Bristol the son of George Ashton a shoemaker b abt 1810 Swerford? Lancashire, George is shown as a widower in the 1851 census they were living in the parish of St James Bristol the same as Ellen and her father. In 1841 census George is shown with John and an Ann b abt 1796 According to the BAFHS Baptismal Index John was born 27 April 1833 and baptised 2 July 1837 parents George and Ann at St James Bristol. Tony has kindly pointed out to me that In a previous e-mail I gave the wrong month for John's baptism as 2nd. February 1837, whereas it should be 2nd. July 1837. I can see how I mistook the figures of the months. I thought the 7 for July was a 2 for February. Easily done, when you are not wearing the right specs for the computer. Thanks, Tony:-) So -- the baptism should read: John ASHTON, son of George and Ann, was born on 27th. April 1833 and baptized on 2nd. July 1837 at the church of St. James, Bristol.
