    3. This subject seems to regularly crop up on the list. Last night on BBC4 there was a programme called "The boats that built Britain" and this episode was about Bristol Channel Pilots, their boats and how they worked. I didn't realise that in the early days the pilots were competing against each other so the pilot with the fastest boat got to the incoming ship first so got the job.
