A billiard marker would have make a slightly shady income by playing for prize money or for wagers, I believe. One of the characters in Lewis Carroll's "Hunting of the Snark" was one: A billiard-marker whose skill was immense Might perhaps have won more than his share But a banker engaged at enormous expense Had the whole of their cash in his care I think this is the first time I heard of one in real life.
