    3. Probably a red herring but there is a medal card on a certain website to which I subscribe. It relates to an Arthur J S HINTON who may have been a bombadier (?bdr) in the Royal Garrison Artillery during WWI. He was awarded Pip, Squeak and Wilfred plus clasp, emblem, roses etc. I think he therefore MAY have been part of Kitchener's Old Contemptibles. I have a scan of his medal card. If this could possibly be your chap I am happy to forward off-list? Of course, I have no idea if the is he, nonetheless he may be the same chap who was made a lieutenant. 3. You never know as I don't think 'SHEAFF' is a common name to begin with and in that combination, I sure there must be a connection. Is it perchance on Ancestry? I have that and could find the record myself. I am interested in the RIDOUT surname, not because I have any direct connections but because I have a puzzle in my own STOCKDILL family, with a Ridout connection, which has long intrigued me! I had a gt-gt-uncle called George Stockdill, born Easingwold, Yorkshire, in 1803, who went to London and married a publican's widow at Holborn, took over the pub, also built many houses in London and died a very wealthy man - leaving some £3,000 and FIFTY houses he'd built - in 1886. This is the bit that interests me: in his will Uncle George left a legacy of £10 - worth quite a bit, I suppose, in 1886 - to one SARAH STOCKDILL RIDOUT of Gillingham, Dorset. I realise this is a Somerset list but Gillingham is very close to the Somerset border and RIDOUT appears to be quite a strong Somerset surname, second only in concentration with the Surname Atlas CD to Dorset. I have been trying for a long time to find out just who Sarah Stockdill Ridout was and why she would have my surname as a middle name! Extensive research established that she was not a member of my family, therefore she or her parents must in some way have been close to my Gt-Gt-Uncle George in some way to have taken his name as a middle name. My belief is that the Ridouts were probably in some way connected with George's wife, Sarah Archer, previously BUTT, who came from Mere, just a few miles from Gillingham on the Somerset side of the border. Sarah Stockdill Ridout was born at Gillingham, Dorset, in 1863, daughter of George RIDOUT and Mary TOOGOOD. In the 1871 census George was a bookseller in Sherborne and in 1881 Sarah was working as a draper's assistant in Wimborne. She married in 1885 at Lambeth, South London (don't know why there) to a Frederick John BRACHER. The Brachers are still in Gillingham today as well-known funeral directors and I contacted them but never had any information back. They probably didn't have any, anyway. I just wondered if, by any chance, George Ridout was connected in any way with your Ridouts? He was born at Sherborne circa 1831/32 but I believe his father was also George Ridout, born Milborne Port, Somerset, circa 1805, so there would appear to be a Somerset connection. -- Roy Stockdill Genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about."
