My Gt Gt Grandfather, Cap'n Samuel Francis Roberts, a skipper from Bridgwater, had a share in a schooner called Boadicea in the 1860s. I have a nice watercolour painting of it in Marseilles in 1863, which indicates that he went on quite long trips. I have no idea who named the ship, or why this name was chosen, although I've always assumed it was out some sort of Victorian patriotism, at a time when people liked to celebrate Great Britons. ----- Original Message ----- From: "A.
