In 2006,I corresponded with a B & S list member about the TOWNSEND family of Bitton. A recent correspondent has a link with a different TOWNSEND branch. Here are some details about this family, which I have found so far: Samuel TOWNSEND, son of William and Mary, was baptized on 22nd. August 1784 at Bitton. The marriage of Samuel TOWNSEND and Sarah BRAIN, took place, by banns, on 19th. July 1807 at St. Mary Redcliffe Church, Bristol. Samuel and Sarah TOWNSEND had three children baptized on 14th. October 1810 at Hanham, Gloucestershire. They were William, Nancy, 2 years 9 months and Ruth, 4 years. They had two children, Esther and Hannah, baptized on 21st. May 1815 at Oldland. Abode was Grimsbury Farm and father's occupation was wheelwright. David TOWNSEND, son of Samuel and Sarah, was baptized on 7th. June 1818 at Oldland. David was aged 1 year 8 months at the time of his baptism. Abode was near Grimsbury and father's occupation was wheelwright. Mary was baptized on 20th. June 1824 at Oldland. The abode was near Grimsbury and father's occupation was wheelwright. It is recorded in the Indexes to Bristol Record Office Tithe Apportionment Books that Samuel TOWNSEND was the occupier of a house and garden owned by Samuel BATCHELLOR. Sarah TOWNSEND, aged 66, of Cock Rd was buried on 13th. October 1850 at Holy Trinity Church, Kingswood. At the time of the 1851 census, widower, Samuel TOWNSEND, 66, born in Bitton, was a coach builder in Oldland, Gloucestershire. He was living at Cock Road, Oldland. In his household were granddaughters Sarah TOWNSEND, 11, born in Bitton, and Mary TOWNSEND, 7, born in Bristol. Census reference HO107/1944 Folio 0458 Schedule 126 The marriage of David TOWNSEND, bachelor, and Hannah PEACOCK, spinster, took place, by banns, on 2nd. May 1836 at St. Mary's Church, Bitton, Gloucestershire.
