    1. [B&S] John HADLEY and Fortunatus HAGLEY
    2. Hello list, I am a new subscriber to this list but have been a genealogist for more than 40 years. After many years of fruitless searching I have recently discovered that my direct ancestor Betty HADLEY was the illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth VAGG and John HADLEY, a limner of the City of Bristol. (a limner appears to be an itinerant portrait painter). She was baptised in Blandford Forum, Dorset in 1752. Fortunately there is a Bastardy Bond in existence in which John HADLEY agrees to pay £50 a year for her upkeep. The other bondsman is Fortunatus HAGLEY a merchant tailor of Bristol. I have found quite a few snippets of information about Fortunatus, including his bankruptcy and his will. I have a strong feeling that Fortunatus and John were related, even though the surnames are slightly different; possibly even father and son. I am looking for a baptism and burial records for either man, and possible marriages. If anyone can help I should be very grateful. Kind regards Sandra

Fortunatus HAGLEY, Tailor, was made a Bristol Burgess on 22nd. February 1733 by vote of Council. Fortunatus HAGLEY, Merchant Tailor, was made a Bristol Burgess on 29th. April 1784. His qualification to be made a Bristol Burgess was through his marriage to Ann daughter of Thomas LEWIS, Whittawer. If anyone can help I should be very grateful. Hi Sandra, Fortunatis (sic) HAGLEY was buried on 19th. December 1760 at St. Thomas, Bristol. No age was given, but this could have been the Fortunatus HAGLEY who was made a Bristol Burgess in 1733. Fortunatus HAGLEY, aged 52 years, was buried on 20th. August 1806 in Old Yard, St. Thomas, Bristol. Josephine -- Josephine Jeremiah www.ianandjo.dsl.pipex.com

    2. Josephine, Thank you so much for the additional information, particularly the burials. I think the second Fortunatus Hagley is the son of Robert and Mary who was baptised in London (St Leonards Shoreditch) in 1753. So your conclusion that the two Fortunatus men were not father and son is probably correct. However I am certain there must be a relationship between them - too much of a coincidence to have such unusual names and the same profession; perhaps uncle and nephew?
