Dear Josephine In the 1841 Bitton census there is a Thomas Gully, 30, with a Sarah Gully 25. He is an agricultural labourer and both are born in county [Glos]. There are no children with them. Does this help or should I look further? Ros

The Thomas Gully, whom you've found, ought to be the one whom I'm seeking, but his wife, Sarah, is the problem. In the 1851 Bitton census, my Thomas Gulley (sic) has a wife called Susannah, whom I had already thought might be a second wife. However, I can't find a marriage for a Thomas Gully and a Susannah and I can't find a suitable marriage for a Thomas Gully and a Sarah, other than the marriage of Thomas Gulley (sic)and Sarah Pippin on 17th. October 1827 at St. Paul's Church, Portland Square, Bristol. My Thomas Gully, born in 1810, would have been a little young for this marriage, while the bride, going by a late 18th-century Bristol baptism for someone of her name, would have been too old. I haven't found a suitable burial for a Sarah Gully, but there was one for a Susannah Gully, 53, of Trinity (presumably Holy Trinity, Kingswood), who was buried on 13th. January 1864 at Christchurch, Hanham. Perhaps Sarah was put instead of Susannah on the 1841 census. Could you give me the 1841 census reference of the Thomas and Sarah Gully, whom you've found, please? Then I can look them up in my 1841 Gloucestershire census CDs, which do not have a surname index. Doing this I may find other relatives, whom I already know, living nearby in 1841. Josephine -- Josephine Jeremiah www.ianandjo.dsl.pipex.com
