I have been talking with Josephine Jeremiah about Emma HOBBS who married Robert Purnell WALL. Josephine mentioned in a previous post that Robert Purnell WALL married Emma HOBBS on the 28th March 1826 at the Church of St. James, Mongotsfield, GLS. Robert was noted as being from Stroudwater, GLS. while Emma was from Mangotsfield. The majority of my research interest is in finding out more about the WALL family line. Dianne Dixon mentioned that Robert Purnell WALL was the decedent of Thomas WALL and Rebekah PURNELL. I have been unable to reach her via email. Can anyone help me find out more about Robert Purnell WALL's birth, baptism, and death and about his ancestors on the WALL side? I am hoping that this research may help in finding out not only more about the WALL family, but more about who might have owned a sword that has been past down in my family for a very long time. I have taken pictures of this sword and had it dated on various fora (sg. forum) a link to the main forum it was discussed on can be found here: http://www.swordforum.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1135218#post1135218 in summary the sword can be described as Pattern: 1822 Type: 1837-1845 User: Infantry Officer Group: Almost any -- Guards or Line (are there any other groups?) (consisting of: Royal Engineers, Royal Staff Corps, Royal Army Medical Corps, or Royal Artillery) Unfortunately I have had no luck in finding out who might have been in the military either on the WALL or HOBBS side of the family during this time period since Robert Purnell WALL is noted as a Wine and/or Spirit Merchant in posts by Josephine and Dianne with links to archives noting his profession. His son, John WALL, was apprenticed to John MABYN the draper and haberdasher (for which I own the original document, if someone would like scans of this document please feel free to contact me). John WALL subsequently emigrated to Canada. Could it be possible that Robert was in the military at one point? Might his father have been? I have not been able to find any documents leading to the answering of these questions. Could someone please help me? Sorry for the complicated post. -John

Hi John, Welcome to the Bristol_and_Somerset list :-) Robert Purnell WALL's parents were married, by licence, on 20th. January 1801 in Stroud, GLS. There is reference to Robert Purnell WALL and his parents and siblings in a message from David Daniell on 1st. May 2008 on the Gloucester List: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/gloucester/2008-04/1209619792 Gloucester Diocese Burial Index 1813-1851 is produced on CD by Gloucester Family History Society: http://www.gfhs.org.uk/products.htm I don't have this CD, but perhaps someone could do a look up for the burials of Robert Purnell WALL's parents, Thomas and Rebekah. If they are listed in this resource, you may be able to find out their ages at death and consequently the approximate years of their births. Thomas WALL and Robert Purnell WALL, wine and spirit merchants of Stroud, are mentioned in the Gloucestershire Archives: Online Catalogue: http://ww3.gloucestershire.gov.uk/DServe/dserve.exe?dsqIni=Dserve.ini&dsqApp=Archive&dsqCmd=NaviTree.tcl&dsqDb=Catalog&dsqItem=D1241/5&dsqField=RefNo Josephine -- Josephine Jeremiah www.ianandjo.dsl.pipex.com

Hi John, A possible death registration for Robert Purnell WALL's mother might be that of Rebecca WALL in the September quarter of 1837 at Stroud, GLS. Details from FreeBMD: http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ You can search for this death in the Gloucestershire BMD Indexes: http://ww3.gloucestershire.gov.uk/bmd/DeathSearch.aspx You'll see that this Rebecca WALL was 61 years old, when she died, which gives an approximate birth date of 1776 for Rebekah or Rebecca PURNELL, if this is the right one. The burial of Rebekah or Rebecca WALL could be on the Gloucester Diocese Burial Index 1813-1851, produced on CD by Gloucester Family History Society: http://www.gfhs.org.uk/products.htm Josephine -- Josephine Jeremiah www.ianandjo.dsl.pipex.com
