I'm glad that the pieces of the puzzle are coming together. What I've found for you is just through having some local knowledge and knowing where to look in the resources available. For Bristol research, the resources on baptisms, marriages and burials produced by the Bristol & Avon Family History Society are excellent. http://www.bafhs.org.uk/ The B & A FHS site also has the South Gloucestershire Burial Index, which is a great resource: http://www.bafhs.org.uk/burialindex/burials.htm For Bitton research there is the excellent Bitton Families web site: http://www.bittonfamilies.com/ Old maps are useful. If you take a look at the the map of the environs of Clifton and Bristol c.1857, which is on my web site http://www.ianandjo.dsl.pipex.com/bristolbits/bristol/bolton.htm you will see the position of Bitton in relation to Bristol. Bitton is in the bottom right-hand quarter of the map. Here's a map I have just found of Gloucestershire in 1843. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~genmaps/genfiles/COU_files/ENG/GLS/archer_gls_1843.html If you scroll down to the second enlargement, you will see a section of the map which includes Bristol and Bitton.
