Hi Janet, A possible match for your William BROWNE could be William BROWNE, stationer, who was made a Bristol Burgess on 29th. March 1823 by vote of Council. B & A FHS Bristol Burgess Books Vols. 1 to 21 Index & Transcriptions 1557-1995 www.bafhs.org.uk It looks like this was the William BROWNE, who was a Bookseller, Stationer, Binder at 29 Clare Street, Bristol, according to Pigot's Bristol Directory of 1830: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/GLS/Bristol/ABBOTtoDUFFETT.html Josephine -- Josephine Jeremiah www.ianandjo.dsl.pipex.com

    3. Many thanks Josephine and Bernice for your help.  I think this could well be the William Browne I am looking for though I am puzzled that he is described as a merchant rather than a bookseller.  I found his daughter's baptisms in the Non conformist records, but it doesn't specify which chapel was used.  I shall keep digging, Janet

I looked for the baptisms of the daughters of William BROWNE in the Nonconformist Baptismal Registers in Bristol Record Office 1754 to 1837 produced by B & A FHS, but had no result. I now see that familysearch has the address of Trinity Street, St Augustine, Bristol for the births of Fanny Osler BROWNE (1821) Mary BROWNE (1823) and Lucy BROWNE (1825), daughter of William and Mary, from Non-Conformist Record Indexes . I didn't see the occupation of merchant, though, so perhaps you had this information from another source. Josephine -- Josephine Jeremiah www.ianandjo.dsl.pipex.com

    3. Having spent some time "digging" for information on William Browne Bookseller (who was brought to my attention by kind list members Josephine, Bernice and alsoKevin - many thanks Kevin for all your info) I found a notice that this William Browne died suddenly and unexpectedly in the 1830s so sadly he is ruled out as my man who definitely featured in the 1841 census. So it's back to the drawing board and if anyone should spot a likely candidate in their researching I should be very grateful to hear from them. Janet
