I still feel there was doubt. I have never backtracked on John to see if he attaches to my Tree. maybe a project for 2014. My COTTLES were also in St. Pip N Jay. However, the story is told here: 1889 The murder of Jane Withey, St Philips, Bristol. http://www.flickr.com/photos/brizzlebornandbred/5191382591/ Josephine
Hi I have JOHN WITHEY who was convicted of stabbing his wife Jane, in Bristol, and subsequently hanged. It was in the London Times, so quite a big story. I always felt with todays up to date detecting it would have been found to be an accident. So 3 children were left to fend for themselves. a sad story. Does this show up in this site? I've had a look at the 'rogues gallery' of prisoners on the Bath Ancestors database, this morning. For anyone who hasn't taken a look, yet, instructions on how to see all the 'prisoners' portraits' or search for an individual can be found on the following page. http://www.batharchives.co.uk/what_we_hold/records_for_family_history/bath_ancestors_database.aspx The photographs are fascinating. Josephine
Hi All Thank you Josephine, for posting this link. I had no idea that Bath RO had created an online index of their holdings - I thought I had all my family records from there up to date but I could quickly see that I had missed a few so now I am very much looking forward to catching up! Thanks also, of course, to Colin and the wonderful team at Bath RO :-) Regards Karen Francis > Date: Mon, 16 Dec 2013 08:21:10 +0000 > To: bristol_and_somerset@rootsweb.com > From: jojeremiah@dsl.pipex.com > Subject: [B&S] Bath historians given 'rogues' gallery' of prisoners -- BBC article > > Hi Listers, > > I've just spotted this BBC article which may be of interest to list > members with links to Bath: > > Bath historians given 'rogues' gallery' of prisoners > > http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-somerset-25390376 > > Josephine > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to BRISTOL_AND_SOMERSET-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
Hi Listers, Further to my previous message about Bath's 'rogues' gallery' of prisoners, this Bath Chronicle article has caught my eye: Named and shamed: Bath's most wanted criminals of yesteryear http://www.bathchronicle.co.uk/Named-shamed-Bath-s-wanted-criminals-yesteryear/story-20326661-detail/story.html Josephine
Hi Listers, I've just spotted this BBC article which may be of interest to list members with links to Bath: Bath historians given 'rogues' gallery' of prisoners http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-somerset-25390376 Josephine
Sorry Folk, this is addressed to Jason, My Computer crashed before I could send this reply to him and I do not have his address. I have PRIDDY, PREDDY, PREDY, PRIDY, PREDETH, PRIDETH and variations in my tree. I have searched the Parish Records for Priddy for the PRIDDY name and I can save you time. There is no PRIDDY in Priddy parish. However, if you would care to send me information, privately, about your family, I may be able to connect you to my family. Bob Hayward

Hi Listers, Is Margaret Brownrigg still a member of the list or does anyone have her current e-mail address, please? Any replies about her e-mail address had better be off list, please. In March 2007, Margaret wrote about the bombing in Abbots Leigh during the Second World War. I've had a message from the granddaughter of one of Margaret's neighbours, from those days, who would like to get in touch with Margaret. Josephine

Yes I had noted it was down by the docks.. that would be the area Mike as he was a sailor. Maybe they were staying at the Red Lion if number 12 is the same as was in 1852. An interesting map of Bristol, c1863, is here: <http://mapco.net/bristol/bristol.htm> The Hotwell Road area was down by the docks - a world away from high class Clifton ! If you were to start at No.1 Hotwell Road in 1871 and walk to the Rising Sun pub at No. 32, you would pass: Swan Inn at no.1 Plume of Feathers at no.4 Red Lion at no.12 Dock Gates Tavern at no.14 Star Inn at no.18 Brandy Cask at no.21 Elephant & Castle at no.29 before finally arriving at the Rising Sun at no.32 !
