Hi again Sorry I wrongly assumed you were a user as you had posted a few links from the Bristol Post No problem, I have now registered and sent a link to the post in the archives, hopefully it will help someone to link up It will also hopefully introduce a few more to the usefulness of mailing lists :-) NB It was by far and away the worst joining procedure I have had to endure ! 1. [B&S] PCC Wills re Bristol
    2. Nivard Ovington
    3. Something I don't recall seeing mentioned is the PCC Wills recently released on Ancestry They are for wills proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, the highest court in the land, covering 1384 to 1858 when probate became a civil matter These are the same wills as released on the National Archives back in about 2002, but clearly its a great benefit to be able to view and examine as many as you wish to as paying for each one can mount up A keyword search for Bristol on Ancestry in the PCC wills gets 8,892 hits A similar search on the National Archives PCC wills database gets 10,670 Which is worth bearing in mind, mainly as the NA have indexed more keywords than Ancestry but is also more accurate For example a keyword of Mariner on Ancestry gets only 58, whereas on the NA you get over 61,000 as the NA have indexed many occupations as well as names & places So worth checking the NA to see if you get more hits then interrogate Ancestry for the will It can also be a good ploy to search a name of interest in the keyword box, as this picks up where the surname was used as a second name as well as a surname, not much use for SMITH but effective for slightly less common names :-) -- Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK)

Hi Jean Yes thats the way I read it too But if thats the earliest found, what if someone comes up with an earlier one Unless they know its the very first day it was used, an earlier one may come to light Think how many letters and envelopes there are around the world sitting in peoples drawers, bookshelves etc, I have found several old ones used as book marks, there must be oodles out there just waiting to be discovered Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 29/01/2014 11:47, Jean Wood wrote: > I read it very closely - I THINK they mean that specific Date Stamp from Nigeria. > I have several envelopes from Paris France 1870, and 1882 and Gravesend date stamped 1874, > Hexham 1868 and others > Jean Wood

Similarly I came to the conclusion that the owner could be John S. MIZEN rather than John R. MIZEN. As you say, little can be found on a John R. I was surprised about how many MIZEN entries there are in the 1935 directory. > So Josephine and any other interested part, could you give your opinion > on the name on the RAOB certificate > Is it John S MIZEN (J S MIZEN) When I looked yesterday I thought it was an S and so did my husband, but he queried the R on the payslips which we couldn't see clearly. I said that could have been a typing error. It's interesting to see just how much can be found in the records with only a name and a location with which to work. I hope that someone will find the MIZEN family so that this treasure trove of photographs and documents can be passed to family members. Josephine

    3. Hi Josephine I have a soft spot for those that fought that we may be free, they deserve to be remembered I had a look to see if I could identify this man It mentions that a pay slip shows a John R MIZEN , also a photo for a Doris MIZEN The Doris MIZEN could be a daughter, sister, daughter in law or some other relation I only found two with a Bristol connection A Doris May MIZEN b1903 who died 1994 (nee CLEAVER? wife of Leslie A J MIZEN m1934, Leslie died in 1962) And Doris A MIZEN b1921 d1941 parents John S MIZEN & Ada RICKARDS m1918 (is this the young lady in the photo with the cups perhaps?) I then looked a little further for a John R MIZEN and found very little and nothing with a Bristol connection Looking at the RAOB certificate, personally I would say the name is John S MIZEN , backed up by the signature on the left red bar, which looks to me to be J S MIZEN (could they have misread the John R on the payslip?) Turning to the other photos, the one of the uniformed man appears to be a younger version of the older man in the other photos, a WW1 vintage man in RAMC uniform, looking at the medal rolls there are no John R MIZENs in the RAMC but there is a John S MIZEN RAOC Private John S MIZEN 66104 RAMC, date of entry into a theatre of war 27th Sept 1915 , he was entitled to the 1915 Star, the Victory and British War medals I found the death of John Stanley MIZEN in 1981 England & Wales, Death Index, 1916-2007 about John Stanley Mizen Name: John Stanley Mizen Birth Date: 25 Jul 1894 Date of Registration: Mar 1981 Age at Death: 86 Registration District: Bristol Inferred County: Avon Volume: 22 Page: 0984 Which marries with the details on his baptism England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975 about John Stanley Mizen Name: John Stanley Mizen Gender: Male Birth Date: 25 Jul 1894 Baptism Date: 17 Aug 1894 Baptism Place: Bristol, Gloucester, England Father: Samuel Henry Mizen Mother: Alice Ann FHL Film Number: 1596629 Reference ID: yr 1885-1903 p 23 His parents married in 1888 Marriages Dec 1888 HENDY Alice Ann Barton R. 6a 359 MIZEN Samuel Henry Barton R. 6a 359 John Stanley appears with his parents in the 1911 census in Bristol John appears in Kellys in 1938 Kellys 1938 Bristol & Suburbs MIZEN Jn Stanley 37 Rochester rd St Annes Pk It appears that first wife Ada nee RICKARDS may have passed away in 1928 (could she be the well dressed lady in one photo?), John may have remarried to an Elsie PAGE in 1929 (no children found) He may then have married again in 1952 to a Harriet L MASLIN who may be the lady in the caravan photo (Harriet Louise MIZEN b1898 d1992) Could the payslips be significant as in 1959 John Stanley would have reached retirement at 65? The first marriage seems to have produced four children Sadly three dying young Births Sep 1918 Mizen Edna A Rickards Bristol 6a 190 (death registered 1922) Mizen Leslie S Rickards Bristol 6a 190 (death registered 1918) Births Mar 1921 Mizen Doris A Rickards Bristol 6a 223 (death registered 19410 Births Sep 1924 Mizen Eileen Rickards Bristol 6a 241 Possibly married a Albert G KENT in 1945 Two potential children which I won't mention here --------------- At first I thought the W HARRIS on the Union cards might be connected but realise he was just the branch secretary now but believe he may be Wilfred Henry HARRIS b1915 d2001 He was at the 34 Oldfield Rd address Telephone books 1969 HARRIS W H 34 Oldfield Rd Hotwells ... Bristol 20232 Still the same in 1980 I suspect this was his father at the same address in 1947 Western Daily Press Feb 13 1947 Fatal Collapse A verdict of "death in accordance with the medical evidence" (heart failure) was returned bu the jury at the Bristol inquest yesterday on Henry William HARRIS aged 66 a carpenter of 34 Oldfield Road Hotwells who collapsed and died at his home So Josephine and any other interested part, could you give your opinion on the name on the RAOB certificate Is it John S MIZEN (J S MIZEN) Or John R ? 3. I suspect the series will find its way overseas relatively quickly There will be a greater interest this year than any other I would say TV series seem to make it abroad in both directions much quicker than they used to in the past I watched it last night and it was very good, I do not think anyone will be overly shocked at any of the content but it was interesting all the same I have no doubt there will be many more programs on the subject this year, both here and around the world, there can be few if any places not effected by the "War to end all Wars" It is fitting that those that fought for our freedom should not be forgotten, so the more the better IMHO On the subject of The Great War, I haven't seen the following mentioned of late <http://www.oucs.ox.ac.uk/ww1lit/> Two collections, one of poetry, letters and other items plus the Great War Archive consisting of items contributed by the general public Its well worth searching and or browsing Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK)
