    3. Yes my Mum (Agnes Blake 1909-1992) was a student at Barleyfields School. I still have her report card somewhere here. It stated one thing that Mum was always proud of -- she was never late. And that is true. W. E. Braund was the master there at that time. Good memory, Josephine. Often the messages are from people who have been looking in the rootsweb archives and have found something of interest to them, which I have mentioned in a list message years ago. I have recently been in contact with a lady in Australia who found the 2004 Bristol_and_Somerset messages, which Edna and I wrote about Barleyfields School in Bristol. A relative of my new correspondent received a prize from this school in 1909. Back in 2004, I wrote, Barleyfields was a council school in Upper Cheese Lane, St. Philips, Bristol. In 1911 the master was W. E. Braund and the infants' mistress was Miss Hurford. I believe it was called Barleyfields Mixed County School. It was just a little snippet, but has been one that has led to further correspondence about Bristol families of the 19th century. More on these later, if I have time. 3. Hi Marjorie, People think of the Workhouse as a dreadful place, but for some members of the community, it did provide a useful service. Henry would have been fed and possibly clothed by the Workhouse - it wasn't necessarily such a bad life. The intent was to make it a bad place for those who could work but didn't choose to. The (local) government wanted to crack down on the scroungers - nothing changes, does it ! But Henry and others would receive more sympathetic treatment. I don't believe there was any "official" requirement for inmates to be baptised as a condition of admission, but local vicars, or perhaps the Workhouse Master, may have excerted pressure for it to happen. As to why the parents hadn't baptised him at birth, I can only speculate. Perhaps they thought he wouldn't survive beyond infancy and couldn't afford the cost of a baptism. Was he baptised at the same time as one of his siblings ? That often happened, since vicars could do a "two for the price of one" deal. Best wishes, Mike -----Original Message----- From: bristol_and_somerset-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:bristol_and_somerset-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Art & Marjorie Keates Sent: 23 October 2010 13:58 To: bristol_and_somerset@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [B&S] Poor Law TNA Documents On-Line Hello Mike and Josephine Back from a trip to England and now trying to catch up on emails. Takes me a while. Thank you, Mike, for publishing this list. Henry Latcham popped out at me. And thank you, Josephine, for drawing my attention to it. Poor Henry. He seems to have lived almost his whole life in the Clutton Workhouse appearing in census 1851-1911. He was with his family, age 6, in 1841. He was described in the Clutton Workhouse Medical Relief Book 1889/1890 as having been an idiot from birth. He was born about 1835 in Radstock but not baptised until 19 April 1837 in St Nicholas Church, Radstock. His siblings were all baptised soon after birth but his baptism entry says he was 5 years old. Some confusion re his age? Why did his parents wait so long in his case? Was that a requirment for admission to the workhouse and they were about to have him placed in the workhouse? He died 1914, age 78, in the Clutton Workhouse. At any rate, thank you to you both for this item and drawing my attention to it. It's one instance of Henry that I did not have. Marjorie

    3. Hi Lynne, The City of Bristol Workhouse was at Stapleton, not to be confused with Eastville Workhouse, which served the Barton Regis area. Although little by way of records has survived, an exception is some Creed Registers. These record admission and discharge dates, with the religious denomination of the inmates. But before I get your hopes up, I'm not sure whether they go back to the period you need. I've extracted information from the 1890's, but you could check with the Bristol Record Office (mailto:bro@bristol.gov.uk) which dates are covered. As far as I can see, they are not listed in the On-line Catalogue. If you manage to find out the dates covered by the surviving Creed Registers, can I ask that you post the information to the list, as I'm sure many would find the information useful. 2. Hiya. Have done everything you said, have got some random e-mails back from 2007. Tomorrow I have more time and will do it again like you say and see what turns up. Short of time today but it obviously works so will keep trying. Unfortunately the e-mails are not from the family names, but retreval is obviously possible yipee. Thanks. Will let you know how I get on via your own e-mail address or may be accused of this being off - subject. Many thanks Deana. ----- Original Message ----- From: "John M" <JHWM1@btconnect.com> To: <bristol_and_somerset@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 19, 2010 2:44 PM Subject: Re: [B&S] Josephine's dead Acorn! > Afternoon Deena > Once you've located a pst file (and you may also find them in eg > 'windowsold' folder, then open outlook express and on the file tab at the > top left of the screen click 'import export', select import from another > program or file, next, personal folder .pst, next, then in the file name > box > click browse to the left until you select the address that you found your > .pst folder in. > Then, next, and you should in a min see the old e mails being reloaded > into > outlook express etc. > > If it's too jam packed then on the top file menu select archive and set > the > date to the most recent date you want to keep current and then let it > archive. 3. I have been searching Google Books for the names of my ancestors and have turned up some interesting snippets. Some of my ancestors appear in The Poll at the Election of a Knight of the shire for the County of Gloucester ...1776. http://books.google.com/books?id=EN8HAAAAQAAJ&pg=PR1&dq=%22THe+Poll+at+the+Election+of+a+Knight+of+the+Shire+for+the+County+of+Gloucester%22&hl=en&ei=1uS-TNubJ9CU4gaD--W6AQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=3&ved=0CDQQ6AEwAg#v=onepage&q&f=false This book includes places in Barton Regis Hundred such as Clifton, Mangotsfield, St. Philip & St. Jacob, St. James Easton and Stapleton. Other Gloucestershire Hundreds in the B & S area are Henbury Hundred, Pucklechurch Hundred, Thornbury Hundred and Langley and Swineford Hundred. The latter Hundred includes places such as Bitton, Oldland and Hanham. It's well worth a look and I have certainly found some new information there. Thank you very much for looking, Jenny. > Thomas HAYMAN born in Northerin[?], Hanover [according to the pensioner > papers] joined the York Rangers in 1792. The fact that this Thomas HAYMAN was born in Hanover and not in Bristol would fit the 1841 Bristol census information that my Thomas HAYMAN was not born in county. > He was pensioned in 1804 after losing a leg in Saint Domingo. Although > the papers do not give his address at the time, the word 'Bristol' is > handwritten on the top. Thank you for this as the date of 1804 rules out this man being my Thomas HAYMAN because my ancestor was married at Pip & Jay in Bristol in 1797 and his occupation was recorded as brass smelter at the baptisms of five of his children children at Pip & Jay between 1797 and 1808. I thought that he may have either been in the army before his marriage or after his children were born. However, the Thomas HAYMAN, whom you have found is likely to have been the one who was examined at the trial of Charles PINNEY in 1832, so that's interesting. > I can send you scans of the papers as attachments if you new PC is up to > receiving such. They contain a description of Thomas. Thanks for your kind offer, but there is no need to do so as, going by the information you've given me, the Thomas HAYMAN who was a Chelsea Pensioner is not my ancestor. But it was interesting to see what information is available and the birthplace of Hanover certainly gave me food for thought for a while! Josephine -- Josephine Jeremiah www.ianandjo.dsl.pipex.com
