    3. Hi All, Following the link that Josephine posted earlier, I see that there are lots more "goodies" on this website. They include: Newspaper Indexes Parish Registers Somerset Trade Directory 1874-75 Inquests Miscellaneous The site is http://www.paulhyb.homecall.co.uk/ and is titled South West England Genealogical Indexes. On the Parish Registers page, it says "I am moving in the near future and thus these entries may soon disappear - please copy what you want now! God bless PM". The Author has clearly put a lot of work into the material on this website, so it's worth looking at what's there in case it disappears. Tony has kindly pointed out to me that In a previous e-mail I gave the wrong month for John's baptism as 2nd. February 1837, whereas it should be 2nd. July 1837. I can see how I mistook the figures of the months. I thought the 7 for July was a 2 for February. Easily done, when you are not wearing the right specs for the computer. Thanks, Tony:-) So -- the baptism should read: John ASHTON, son of George and Ann, was born on 27th. April 1833 and baptized on 2nd. July 1837 at the church of St. James, Bristol. Abode was St. James and father's occupation was cordwainer. 3. Hi Skoula John Ashton looks as though he was born in Bristol the son of George Ashton a shoemaker b abt 1810 Swerford? Lancashire, George is shown as a widower in the 1851 census they were living in the parish of St James Bristol the same as Ellen and her father. In 1841 census George is shown with John and an Ann b abt 1796 According to the BAFHS Baptismal Index John was born 27 April 1833 and baptised 2 July 1837 parents George and Ann at St James Bristol. I think you meant 1829 rather than 1839 as the approximate birth year of Henry Charles SPRAGG is 1829 on the 1881 census. Here's a likely match for his baptism: Henry Charles SPRAGG, son of George and Susannah, was baptized on 16th. March 1828 at St. Augustine, Bristol. Abode was Pipe Lane and father's occupation was glazier. (The parish of St. Augustine is not far from that of St. John.) 3. Hi Skoula According to the 1851 census Ellen was born in Barnstaple Devon as was her father Thomas who is shown as a Widower. In 1841 the census shows his wife to be a Mary. Thomas is possibly the Thomas baptised 10 Jun 1805 son of Nicholas and Betty Taylor at St Peter Barnstaple Devon (FreeReg). Ellen has two siblings a Henry b abt 1835 and Mary Ann b abt 1840 both born Barnstaple Devon. Wilder Street is still in existence and it's not far from Eugene Street, where the ASHTON family was living in 1881. Here's a snippet about the origin of the name of Wilder Street. Veronica Smith, in 'Street Names of Bristol: Their Origins and Meanings' (2nd. edition 2002), noted that land in this vicinity was owned by Peter Wilder. In Gordon Beavington's transcription of the 1851 Bristol St. James census, widower, Thomas TAYLOR, 42, and his children, Ellen, 19, Henry 16, and Mary Ann, 11, were all recorded as being born in Barnstaple. The background to the Indian Mutiny is fascinating and until I came across Charles Rabbitts, father of Jonathan, I had no idea that I had a forebear - albeit not a direct ancestor but a sort of great-great-uncle by marriage - involved in it. I will follow up your info re the 3rd Rifle Brigade and see what else I can find on him. I still believe also that there must be a number of YOUNG and RABBITTS researchers out there, considering the extraordinary numbers of people of both names who appear at Frome in the Victorian censuses. If you look at, say, the 1841 and 1851 censuses, you get the impression almost half the town were Youngs and Rabbitts! For example..... 1841 - 92 entries for YOUNG at Frome (including the families of my gt-gt-grandfather JOSIAH YOUNG and his brother JOB YOUNG). 1841 - 72 entries for RABBIT(T)S at Frome (including the aforementioned Charles Rabbitts with parents John and Sarah at Nunney). I am prepared to believe that not all the Youngs were related, since it is a very common surname, but I feel it likely that most, if not all, of the Rabbit(t)s were. 2. Josephine Jeremiah
    3. Bristol as our ancestors saw it, c.1853 We now enter Prince's Street; and on the first turning to the left, passing the EXCISE AND INLAND REVENUE OFFICE, we enter QUEEN SQUARE, two sides of which were burnt down in the riots of 1831. It encloses an area of seven acres and a half, bordered with elm trees, and railed in from the carriage way; with intersecting gravel walks across, and round the green between the trees. In the centre, upon a high Pedestal, is an equestrian statue of KING WILLIAM III. habited as a Roman Caesar; his right arm is extended, and in his right hand he holds a truncheon, which he points as if he were commanding. It is wholly of cast brass, executed by Rysbrach, and is universally allowed by connoisseurs to be the best equestrian statue in this kingdom. It was set up here in the year 1730. Towards its erection the Chamber of Bristol contributed £500; the remainder was defrayed by voluntary subscription of the principal inhabitants. Nearly opposite the statue, to the east, is the CUSTOM HOUSE ; and one branch of the BRISTOL DISPENSARY is in Charlotte Street, Queen Square. ------------------------------------------------------------------- A 1789 map of Queen Square and its surroundings is on my web site: http://www.ianandjo.dsl.pipex.com/bristolbits/bristol/Queensq.htm -- Josephine Jeremiah http://www.ianandjo.dsl.pipex.com

    3. Bristol as our ancestors saw it, c.1853 ... recrossing the old Stone Bridge, at the bottom of High Street, we turn to the left, on the Welsh Back, (so called because the Welsh coasting vessels are stationed there during their stay in Bristol) and enter King Street, on the right of which is ST. NICHOLAS' ALMSHOUSE; and contiguous to it is COOPERS' HALL, now occupied by a CONGREGATIONAL BODY OF DISSENTERS. The THEATRE ROYAL adjoins, which GARRICK highly eulogized on the score of its just dimensions, and who wrote a prologue for the occasion of its opening, which was repeated by POWELL and ARTHUR, May 30, 1766. At a little distance on is the BRISTOL LIBRARY, partly the property of the citizens, and partly the property of the LIBRARY SOCIETY. Its affairs are managed by a committee of shareholders; and the annual subscriber, who must be a shareholder, has to pay £1:11:6. Next to this is the MERCHANTS' ALMSHOUSE, for nineteen superannuated seamen, and for twelve seamen's widows, who each receive 4s. 4d. weekly, besides an annual donation, given by Darby Allen, Esq., amounting to £32 : 10 : 4, which is equally divided between the twelve widows, half-yearly, by the senior churchwarden of ST. STEPHEN'S. By its side is the MERCHANTS' HALL, erected in 1701; and in 1790 it was newly fronted. The chief entrance is at the end of Marsh Street. George IV., on his visit to Bristol, when Prince of Wales, was received here in 1807. -- Josephine Jeremiah http://www.ianandjo.dsl.pipex.com

    3. The 3rd Rifle Brigade was formed in April 1855 largely by transferring men from other battalions of the Rifle Brigade. My ancestor CORNELIUS WOODWARD RIPPON #1393 - was also a Sergeant in the 3rd Rifle Brigade and received the Indian Mutiny Medal with clasp for the capture of Lucknow, March 1858. In the medal roll for the Indian General Service Medal 1854 - 1895 it shows he also received the North West Frontier Bar at the same time. This was awarded in 1877 for an action at Shubkuder (Shab Kadr) on January 2nd 1864. The 3rd Rifles took part in the storming of Laloo and the capture of Fort Mulkah and suffered casualties at Cawnpore, Fort Birwa, Sundeela, Nawabgunge and Punno. He married his wife Mary Jane GRAY in Bengal, India in 1866 & in 1868 they returned to Scotland where in due course their children were born. He became a Drill Instructor for the 1st Renfrewshire Volunteer Battn. I obtained so much information from members help on britregiments@yahoogroups.com and they were able to advise me where to find further records and his discharge papers at Kew etc. This may not answer your questions about later years but I found all this info helped me to finally track him also some descendents who confirmed seeing his medals, and cuttings from the local paper in 1908 of his death and funeral.
