For those who missed it BBC Points West had a special Blitz edition on Wednesday night. It included part of the Arno's Vale ceremony, interviews with people who experienced the Blitz, still pictures plus part of an air raid training film filmed in the city. It is available on iPlayer at the moment if you search for "Points West". How marvellous to have lived through both the wars and to have reached such a great age. I expect that, during the Coventry Blitz of November 1940, your mother-in-law was wondering whether she would survive the night. It must have been particularly horrendous for her being heavily pregnant. > I wonder if anyone knows of any living centenarians who survived the > Bristol blitz and Hitler's bombers? Most of my family who lived through the Bristol Blitz are now gone, but a few years ago my aunt told me that in 1940 she worked in Cock and Bottle Lane off Castle Street and, like many others, worked a half day on Saturdays. The day before the first Bristol Blitz was a Saturday and my aunt told me that on her way home from working her half day, she had seen a delivery being made to one of the big shops in Castle Street. Huge round cheeses were being delivered plus large slabs of cake. All that food was never to be eaten as it must have been destroyed in the night of sheer hell that was to come.! I think it said in the news about the Coventry Blitz that people still turned up for work the next day, but found their city in ruins. So it was in Bristol, on Monday 25th November 1940, after a terrible night, people didn't stay home, but came in to work, as usual, the next day. That Monday morning, my aunt saw that Castle Street was destroyed and she noticed what she thought were cats darting about the rubble. After a closer look she realized that they were big rats! I've told this tale before, so I hope list members will forgive me repeating myself, but it's one that will stay in my memory. Josephine -- Josephine Jeremiah www.ianandjo.dsl.pipex.com

Apart from this person all my family are from the south Gloucestershire area around Bristol so I have very little knowledge about Somerset. My GG Grandfather Samuel Lovell was born 1813 in Mangotsfield but as the church was closed he was baptised at Winterbourne. His parents were Samuel and Elizabeth Lovell and all their other children starting 1806 were baptised at Mangotsfield. I can find no suitable marriage in the Gloucestershire part of the B&AFHS Marriage Index or on Family Search. Samuel died in 1839 but in the 1851 census Elizabeth says she was born in Somerset (1781). I cannot find her in the 1861 census even though I think she probably died in 1862. Hopefully she may be from north Somerset so the marriage could be on the B&AFHS North Somerset Marriages CD which is the only one I don't have. Can I ask someone with this CD to please check for a marriage between "Samuel Lovell and Elizabeth ?" around 1800-1806. Chris Jefferies Cheltenham Glos

Adrian, I have a connection to Ralph de Paynell and found this amongst my notes: ... Another beautiful manor at Kilve E. Quantoxhead mentioned, 1086, in the Domesday Book. It overlooks beautiful Bridgwater Bay. The A/A book states that Kilve Court House -- "At the time of the Domesday Book this manor house belonged to Ralph Pagnell (granted to him by William the Conqueror) but in 1207 it passed to Sir Geoffrey Luttrell and has remained in the Luttrell family for 700 years - one of the longest tenures by a single family recorded in Britain. (Ralph's grand-daughter Frethesant married Geoffrey Luttrell in 1207). Rebuilt in the late 15th century and considerably altered and enlarged in 1614. The Court House is today a parapeted house in mainly Jacobean style, its older parts largely concealed." The estate still has the Luttrell family living within its walls. The Luttrells also owned Dunster Castle and then it passed to the Acland family, who gave it to the National Trust.... Patricia, >From the Bristol Mercury dated Saturday 1st July 1876: "Isabella Card, 17, was indicted for having stolen 17s, the property of Walter Stock at Weare on 14th June. Mr R Valpy prosecuted. Hi Patricia, The most likely sources of information are probably the newspapers and the calendar of prisoners for the quarter session at Taunton. Unfortunately, neither are likely to be on-line records. A major crime might be found in on-line newspapers, but I don't think 3 months for larceny qualifies as this ! Your best bet would be either to visit Somerset Record Office or hire a researcher to look into it. I think you're in Australia, so the former may not be practical. Given that you know the exact date of the sessions, it should not take a researcher long to find out what information is available. It will usually include the age of the person, so that may be sufficient to confirm whether the person is "your" Isabella Card.
