I've just looked at the beautiful snow scenes you sent me during the winter of 2009. They are already part of your history. You must have even more photographs and memories to write about from the recent snow of December 2010. Get started today! :-) Josephine -- Josephine Jeremiah www.ianandjo.dsl.pipex.com

    3. It is sad to hear of loss of property. I don't know if you have heard of the floods occurring in Queensland at present. A large number of people have lost the contents of their homes. I was sad to think of all the family history lost. I have heard that wet photos can be saved but I don't think too many people will know that and will throw their photos on to the growing piles of damaged household goods. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Josephine Jeremiah" <jojeremiah@dsl.pipex.com> To: <bristol_and_somerset@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, January 08, 2011 6:29 AM Subject: [B&S] Midsomer Norton Library closed after damage caused by burstpipes > Midsomer Norton Library is closed for at least a month after damage caused > by burst pipes. > > http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-somerset-12135679 > > I love books so it's sad to read that about 300 books were damaged as well > as carpet and furniture. > > -- > Josephine Jeremiah > www.ianandjo.dsl.pipex.com > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > BRISTOL_AND_SOMERSET-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' > without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message >

    3. Just some ideas... Back up all your family files, photos on a memory stick. Keep the memory stick in a fire proof safety box off-site if possible. Pass information etc. around to family members. If you have made a booklet, perhaps a copy to your local family history centre or library. (;-)) Edna - snowy Ottawa

Hi Kathleen, Your mention of family history and photos lost made me think of my old family photographs, which are saved on a CD along with my family history search. The CD is left in a safe place so that if disaster strikes I have something saved. However, I know that I must take steps to distribute copies of the photographs to family members. I must add that thought to my New Year's Resolutions for family history. Josephine -- Josephine Jeremiah www.ianandjo.dsl.pipex.com

When I posted about the Queensland floods, I was particularly thinking about B & S list members, living in Queensland, with whom I have corresponded about family history over a number of years. I don't think that the floods in Western Australia have been covered in the U.K. as much as the Queensland ones and, to my knowledge, I haven't corresponded with anyone from that area, although I do have correspondents in Perth including distant family members. Here is a BBC report from 20th. 3. Hello Listers Josephine has reminded me that I did, in fact, resolve to do two things. One was to write in narrative form the information that I have already acquired regarding the various branches of my family. The second intention is to write about what I am doing (only the interesting bits) for the benefit of any of my descendants who might be interested. A friend of mine has detailed diaries kept by her mother which give a real insight into the life she led. I do wish that some of my ancestors had done the same. What we do now and the way we live may seem ordinary to us, but I wonder how it will be viewed in 50 years or so. I am telling you this in the hope that it will spur me on to make a start. So far this year I have written nothing! I will begin tomorrow! - Famous last words. Regards Millie

    1. [B&S] Family History New Year's Resolutions
    2. Josephine Jeremiah
    3. I have been chatting off-list to one of our list members who told me that her New Year's Resolution is to write up this year all the family information she has found. That should be one of my New Year's Resolutions, too, as I have so much information floating around in my head but not committed to my family history notes, yet. However, it was less than a week ago that I told another of my B & S correspondents that I was going to refrain from using the computer for a while. Her comment was 'We shall see how good you are at refraining...' I don't think that she thought I would last a week and she was right!:-) But I am going to look at my family history from different angles, besides writing up my notes. I intend to look through all the family history ephemera, which has been collected over the years, and to cherish more family bits and pieces, some of which have been put away and forgotten. At the moment, Ian is cleaning the brass for me. These pieces include my Great-Uncle Gilbert's horse brasses, which his pony, Darkie, once wore. My great-uncle was a wholesale greengrocer in Soundwell, between Staple Hill and Kingswood, and had a vegetable round. There are also brass items acquired from other family members, each holding memories. I have just looked at the results of LSS's hard work and everything is now gleaming, which makes a dull January day seem so much more cheerful. This is the time of year to plan trips for when the weather gets warmer and the days get longer. Hopefully this year I'll visit Haverfordwest, in Wales, where the family of my ancestor, the early 17th-century Bristol mayor, William VAWER, originated. I'm also going to take a good look through my books and resources and perhaps I'll find snippets of information, which I have overlooked. There is a lot to think about and avenues to explore. Does anyone else have any New Year's resolutions connected with family history? Josephine -- Josephine Jeremiah www.ianandjo.dsl.pipex.com

    3. Hello, Ernest George HAYWARD appears to have been born in 1899 at Stoke Bishop and was aged 1 year when the 1901 census was taken. His parents appear to be William G HAYWARD, a coachman, and Laura and they were living at no 8 Rockleaze Road so very close to Frederic SAGE. Claud(sic) HOLLES appears to have been born in 1887 in Kent but certainly lived in Stoke Bishop as he was going there from New York in 1921. William Biddlecombe HARRIS b 1878 Bristol was the son of Anthony William HARRIS, a confectioner, and Elizabeth Ann. In 1901, he was an accountant's clerk living with his parents at 15 Belmont Road, Bristol. He married in 1906. Herbert TOLLEY age 15 was a shipping clerk born in 1885 in Bristol in the 1901 census the son of William James and Elizabeth. Baptised at Holy Trinity, Bristol. George Reginald JENKINS appears to have been born c 1900 and served in WW1. His father lived in Knowle, Bristol. In your initial message about the will of Frederic Samuel SAGE, you mentioned that the name of Herbert Cornall TOLLEY was among others in the legacies to friends. In Kelly's Bristol Directory of 1935, Wm. J. Cornall TOLLEY, heraldic artist, was at 67 Belmont Road. Perhaps he was the father of Herbert.
