    3. My great grandmother lived in Greenway Bush Lane around 1900 and I know that the area has been redeveloped quite considerably since then. There is a photo of the Cricketers' Arms in Greenway Bush Lane http://bristolslostpubs.eu/page99.html - this was destroyed in the blitz as was quite a bit of the surrounding area. There is a Local History Society which covers this area - they might be able to help - they have published a photographic history of Bedminster - it's the Malago Society www.malago.org.uk/ They do not get involved with Family History research but may have a photograph of Greenway Bush Lane. Going by the birthplaces, I think that the Eliza GRIFFITHS, aged 30, of Castle Precincts, born in St. Stephen's, Bristol, was not the same person as the Eliza, aged 24 and born in Bruton, who was living in the St. Paul's household of the TOWNSEND coach maker, who was born in Warmley. Bruton is in Somerset. What was your Eliza's age and birth place in the 1861 census? Josephine -- Josephine Jeremiah www.ianandjo.dsl.pipex.com

    2. Mary Ellen Chambers
    3. Josephine, Bernice and all the many who have assisted me over the past week, a big THANK YOU!!! I have another question/questions. I traced the possible second wife of my Great Great Grandfather David TOWNSEND to the 1851 census as Eliza GRIFFITHS.  This could be the wrong Eliza but in the census she is living in Bristol Castle Precinct with parents John and Mary.  There is a grandchild listed, birth 1836, Fredrick GRIFFITHS and some other children.  I have no idea who his parent/parents were.  Cannot discern his occupation or if he is a student. Could this be my g grandfather and Eliza is the birth mother.  Maybe she married David later in the year 1851 and is listed twice in the census??    My g grandfather's birth is always listed in USA records as 1840 but who knows?  Could be the wrong Griffith's family altogether. I did find a John TOWNSEND age 11, adopted living on Castle St. Monmouthshire County Wales 1851 census.  The head of the house is a woman with surname THOMAS and a man Wm THOMAS or is it TOWNSEND is living there, occupation sailor.  Would a child have been adopted if he was apprenticed to learn the seaman's trade??  Are there adoption records in Wales/Bristol this far back?? I cannot locate his younger brother Wm.  in the 1851 census for Wales or Bristol.  He shows up in the 1861 census living with David and wife Eliza. Any thoughts or ideas as always would be appreciated.

This proves to be correct, as transcribed at Findmypast, if you look at the Bath Registration District, 1861 Census Street Index C-F at..... http://yourarchives.nationalarchives.gov.uk/index.php?title=Place:Bath_Registration_D istrict,_1861_Census_Street_Index_C-F where it is listed as Curbs Castell and Cottages, Dunkerton. I think the mother-in-law's occupation is probably "former inn keeper" but Susan Pothecary was a dressmaker. Observe the long "f" used as an "s". FMP also has this transcribed correctly. -- Roy Stockdill Genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." 3. Hi I missed the first posting about Sarah Brain so am not sure what date range is being considered. There is a Sarah Brain nee Maies in my (distant) family tree from a similar era and who was subject to some unusual circumstances. I doubt that she is the one being looked for but I have included the relevant extract from my notes in case it is of interest:- Charles Maies and Susanna nee Pierce had a daughter, Sarah, who was baptised on 30/12/1771 in St James. Sarah married George Brain on 20/1/1793 in St Philip & Jacob. Sarah appears to have suffered the indignity of George committing bigamy. This information comes from George's will dated 23/8/1831 made shortly after he remarried. George died in 1839 and it has been recorded on the will that although Sarah had been alive when he remarried she had by then died and the legal opinion was that the will should be valid provided that his second wife was known as Brain and received as George's wife. It is known that George and Sarah went to Jamaica where they had children and that George's remarriage was in London. Her death and > children of this marriage, birth or baptisms (Fredrick & Wm.) Hi Mary Ellen, In my previous message, I mentioned that there were three children in the household of David and Hannah TOWNSEND at the time of the 1841 census, Abigail, 5, Zachariah, 3, and Mary 3 months. I've now found that Zachariah TOWNSEND, aged 6, of The Batch, was buried on 17th. March 1844 at Bitton. Abigail may have died young, too, as there is a death registration on FreeBMD for an Abigail TOWNSEND in Clifton in the September quarter of 1849. Previously, I mentioned that there was a death registration for a Hannah TOWNSEND in Clifton in the September quarter of 1849. As the death registrations are in the September quarter of 1849, it's possible that they may have been victims of cholera. Of course, this Abigail TOWNSEND and Hannah TOWNSEND may not belong to your family, but it's a case of leaving no stone unturned. Cholera struck Bristol in 1849 and this epidemic lasted from June to October with 444 people dead. After this there were reforms concerning sanitary state of the city. At the time of the 1841 census, they were living at Warmley Hill, Oldland. Both Hannah and David were recorded as being 25 and the children in their household were Abigail, 5, Zachariah, 3, and Mary 3 months. All were born in the county of Gloucestershire. The occupation of David TOWNSEND was wheelwright. Abigail was born before civil registration, but FreeBMD has the birth registration of Zachariah TOWNSEND at Keynsham in the March quarter of 1838.
