When I posted the article about the River Avon at Bath, I thought you would be interested if you hadn't seen it already, Karen. In my youth, we trailed a small boat to Saltford, put it on the Avon and then went upriver to Bath in it. Halcyon days! I love Bath anyway and don't get to see it enough as I have lots of other claims on my time. Some years ago, the city was on my list of places to visit every year because of the family history fairs and book fairs held there. I think it must have been at one of the family history fairs that I saw you by an old postcard stall. Even when I was a child, I liked Bath as I collected old ornaments and it was a place where I might find some. Once I bought a little porcelain vase in Bath Market, which showed the head of Queen Mary, wife of George V. It was two shillings, which was quite a lot of money for me to spend as I usually picked up Goss china pieces at sixpence each at my favourite antique shop in Staple Hill, near Bristol. I was thinking of that little porcelain vase, when list members were discussing commemorative ware of royal events earlier this week. Sadly, I don't have it anymore as, from time to time, I have cleared the 'clutter' only to regret it years later. Josephine -- Josephine Jeremiah www.ianandjo.dsl.pipex.com

    3. In a previous message, today, I mentioned the Quaker school at Sidcot in Somerset. I've just found a reference to a book about this school. A History of Sidcot School: a hundred years of West Country Quaker education, 1808-1908, by Francis Arnold Knight, was published by J.M. Dent & Co. in 1908. It looks like this book has been reprinted recently. -- Josephine Jeremiah www.ianandjo.dsl.pipex.com

    2. adrianp7
    3. The marriage of George FILER and Harriet WILSON was registered in Bristol during the June quarter of 1878. I suspect that Harriet was the sister of William Henry and Thomas Melhuish WILSON who both married into my HESKINS family. I would appreciate confirmation, please, if at all possible, that Harriet's father was shown as Thomas, a paper maker. Adrian Yorkshire

    1. [B&S] William Harris, Wadeford, Chard, Somerset -- tobacco tin
    2. Josephine Jeremiah
    3. I have just finished watching today's Bargain Hunt from Shepton Mallet on BBC One television. One of the items purchased for auction was an oval brass tobacco tin with an inscription to William Harris of Wadeford Chard Somerset. I've been to Chard, but was unfamiliar with Wadeford so I've just looked up the location of this village in my atlas. So that's another new thing discovered today. The tobacco tin possibly dates from late Victorian or early Edwardian times. -- Josephine Jeremiah www.ianandjo.dsl.pipex.com

    3. This subject seems to regularly crop up on the list. Last night on BBC4 there was a programme called "The boats that built Britain" and this episode was about Bristol Channel Pilots, their boats and how they worked. I didn't realise that in the early days the pilots were competing against each other so the pilot with the fastest boat got to the incoming ship first so got the job. It will be available on BBC iPlayer. Chris Jefferies Cheltenham Glos
