Hi Roy, It would be dull if we all thought the same and if no one had a different opinion. Talking from my own experience, a long time ago a number of my relatives were approached by heir hunters after the death of a family member. In the event, a will was found and no inheritance came to the relatives I knew. However, each one was given a copy of the will and the paper work on the case and a lot of family history information was gleaned from both. Subsequently, I met several distant cousins and corresponded with another so lots of gaps were filled in concerning our family history because of this contact with the heir hunters. In my book, these people are what I would call "ambulance chasers", much like no- win-no-fee lawyers. They are interested only in profit and have no interest whatsoever in genealogy for its own sake. I happen to know also that the percentage of an estate they demand when they sign people up can be very substantial indeed - sometimes as much as 30-35 per cent - and they refuse to release any details whatsoever until they have got mugs to sign on the dotted line. I would not call them genealogists at all - more like commission agents, i.e. bookmakers, since they take advantage of people's greed and desire to get rich quick. I used to see them operating at the dear old Family Records Centre when it was open, and they were more like spivs than genealogists and family historians. -- Roy Stockdill Genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." Me, too, Lin! It's an incentive to get up early and not loaf around on the computer:-) Like you, I think the work of the Heir Hunters looks fascinating. It would be great to have all those resources at one's fingertips. As it is, we don't do so badly with all that there is online for free. I have been scooting around FreeBMD and finding out lots of interesting snippets, today. Josephine Josephine Jeremiah www.ianandjo.dsl.pipex.com

November 1822 at Old Cleeve is shown in the Old Cleeve Bpatisms 1813-1830: http://www.wsom.org.uk/Registers/OClevBap18131830.htm William's occupation is shown as joiner. Bristol baptisms of children of William WILKINS, carpenter, and Harriet WILKINS are to be found in the Bristol Diocese Baptismal Registers Vols. 1 to 7 Index & Transcripts 1813-1837. wwww.bafhs.org.uk They include the baptisms of Emma (1826), Lavinia (1828) and Jemima (1830) at St. Mary Redcliffe Church, Bristol. Abode was Redcliff in 1826 and 1830 and Bedminster in 1828. There were also baptisms for children of William and Harriet WILKINS in the church of St. James, Bristol, but at the baptisms of Ephraim (1823) and Selina (1825) the father's occupation was recorded as chimney sweep. Abode at the time of these baptisms was Castle Precincts, Bristol. Perhaps this WILKINS family isn't yours unless you have an Edwin or Selina in your tree. I wonder if Albert Charles Western knew my grandfather John Floyd who was also an insurance agent living in Kingswood at the same time. He too was buried in Kingswood Holy Trinity churchyard. Bernice

Hi Pat, I looked on the Bristol & Avon Family History Society Members' Interests, http://www.bafhs.org.uk/membership/membershipinterests.htm but no one there is researching WESTERN in Bristol although this surname is being researched in other places. In Kelly's Bristol Directory of 1935, there is an entry for William James WESTERN at 90 High Street, Lower Easton, who may have been one of Ellen's brothers. If Ellen's brother, Albert, had the middle name of Charles, the entry, in the same directory, for Albt. Chas. WESTERN, insur. agt, 11 Grantham Road, Kingswood, could be a match. Ellen WESTERN dau of Peter Albert WESTERN and Georgiana LEE, married Frederick Davis (b Dudley Staffs abt 1873) 26 March 1894 in Bristol. Fredk was a Shoemaker. This is another of those events attributed to Abbots Leigh, the family lived in or near Kingswood, but also family events in St George. Is anybody researching the WESTERN's in Bristol? Ellen and Fredk has the following children. Gertrudge abt 1895 St George Ernest G abt 1896 St George Albert abt 1897 St George Beatrice abt 1898 Moorfields Bristol Crissie in 1900 St George. Have done a lot of research on the WESTERN's, before Bristol they wend their way back through, Bath, WSM, Wookey, all in Somerset to Halberton in Devon in 1600's. It would be nice to find the more recent connections in Bristol. Pat and Vernon in Grimsby, Lincs
I have recently confirmed the name of SHARYAR as one of my research names and as it is such an unusual name wondered if there was anyone on this list who is researching this name also. There are Carhampton and Old Cleeve connections (all with this same spelling) for 2 generations from mid 1700s till early 1800s . Harriet Sharyar married William Wilkins in Bristol in 1822 but some of their children were baptised in Old Cleeve. Regards Trish
