    1. [B&S] Work begins on restoration of historic park's listed bandstand ---article in The Post

    3. Hi Listers, List members with links to Staple Hill in South Gloucestershire may be interested in this article featuring Page Park in The Post, today: Work begins on restoration of historic park's listed bandstand http://www.thisisbristol.co.uk/Work-begins-restoration-historic-park-s-listed/story-16725247-detail/story.html In the article there's a reference to the park's iron railings. When I was a little girl, I remember the stumps of metal along the the top of the park wall and my Mum telling me that the railings had been taken down during the war and that they had been used for the war effort. That was probably the first time I had heard about metal salvage in war time. I have other memories concerning Page Park -- I remember swings, which could seat several children, but I can't recollect, at the moment, if there was a tall 'slider', though I think there must have been one. No local park would have been complete without a 'slider'. In my teenage years, I used the tennis courts and putting green at Page Park, and pushed my nephew's high pram along the park paths. All good memories. Josephine --

I've tried using the advanced search and plugged in a few keywords, and the wildcard implementation is a boon, but I can't work out how to search for a street... Any ideas? 3. Jean I could not see any of the names you mention in the series of Bristol area Lovell trees I have. They contain 32 Charles Lovells which makes it difficult to identify the correct one so it is much easier identify a person using the wife's full name. However you mention your family living in London so may have no Bristol connection. According to the 1881 census surname profiler Bristol and Northampton are the two areas in the country where the name is most common. 3. Hi again Chris I'm afraid the tree that I have for Sir Bernard Lovell stops at John Lovell who married Hester Somerill at Christchurch in Bristol in 1815 and who lived at Oldland, but I don't have the details of the generations further back. My ancestor, Frances Lovell (baptised at Hanham and Oldland Chapelry in 1820 aged 3) was living with Sir Bernard's Fudge and Lovell ancestors in 1841 in Oldland parish and she married Charles Willmott in 1843 who ran the grocer's shop in Cadbury Heath where my mother was born, and one of their twin sons also called Charles Willmott married an Emma Lovell (b.1865) from Sir Bernard's tree. Sir Bernard was born in Rose Cottage, which was built in1780, and which is almost opposite the village hall and his father Gilbert Lovell was church secretary of the Oldland Methodist church in West Street. I think Gilbert ran a radio and cycle shop in West Street. 3. Hi Chris I've got a Lovell tree here wiith Sir Bernard's ancestors on it so I'll dig it out as soon as I can and see who preceeds John Lovell and Hester Somerill. I was in touch with a cousin of Sir Bernard who lived in Scotland but he unfortunately has passed away too. I remember the sudden surge in interest from the New Zealand Lovells and we may have picked up the postings from Family Tree magazine or maybe the Bristol and Avon Family History Society journals. How I used to look forward to those magazines and then going through the printed lists of surname interests from people all around the world. Those were the days when everything was done by post to contact those people and then there were numerous visits to Record Offices, Libraries to view the censuses as they were eventually became open to the public every 10 years once they became 100 years old and to be able to view the actual parish register entries was a joy. Researchers of today have it easy as so much information is now online. 3. Bernice I have details of your Fanny Lovell and family on the large Lovell tree but don't know if the info came from you. We were in contact as far back as 1988 about another surname but I don't have your Lovell interests listed. However we have been in contact several times more recently so perhaps that is where I got the info. I have Sir Bernard's GG Grandparents John Lovell and Hester Somerill and on a separate tree that line continues another four generations to a William and Ester Lovell born about 1650 but have doubts how accurate the earlier data is. Looking at my list of people's interest it is noticeable that suddenly in 1989 there is a lot of interest in Lovell from New Zealand. I think there was a lot of interest in family history around then because the country had an important anniversary. Most of the people in New Zealand named Lovell are descended from a Benjamin Lovell born 1808 in Mangotsfield and his brother James b 1816 who emigrated in 1841. My great, great grandparents were Charles Willmott of Cadbury Heath who married Fanny Lovell. They also married in 1843 but at Holy Trinity, St Philips, Bristol. She was the daughter of Thomas Lovell who moved to Oldland parish from Mangotsfield parish at the beginning of the 1800s. Charles and Fanny Willmott ran the grocer's shop in Cadbury Heath.
