    3. The "brizzlebornandbred" web site is somewhere I try and remember to visit every month or two to catch up with the latest additions. However Josephine's post reminded me that I havnt visited for almost a year so spent many hours yesterday looking at the many hundreds of Bristol area photos added in the last six months. The vast majority photos are of slight interest but there were a few gems. One was a photo of a monumental mason business outside Canford Cemetery taken in the 1920s and run by a cousin of my father. Another was a photo of Pendennis Rd, Staple Hill taken in 1905 is of interest because my Lovell ancestors lived in the road in most census and my father lived in Clifford Terrace in the road during WWI. Pendennis Rd, 1905 < http://www.flickr.com/photos/brizzlebornandbred/6904361864/in/photostream/> However I don't think the photo is of Pendennis Rd, Staple Hill!! I have not visited the road for many years so would like the opinion of people who know the road. All the terrace houses in the road today were on the 1900s OS map on Bristol- Know Your Place and using Streetview none are the same design as houses in the photo. Looking at the 1880s, 1900s 1949 and 2010 OS maps there has been little building in the road since 1900 apart from a few modern houses and no evidence of terrace houses on the east side of the road. 2. David Greenaway
    3. I think we are the victims of poor transcription here. In the1841 census for Bitton we have the following family: William age 50 Dinah age 50 Sons, John 25, James 20, Joseph 18, Samuel 15, Stephen 10, William 8,. Apart from the 2 youngest they are all shown as coal miners. Daughter Alis 22 And finally a female named Willis age 87 The original document is difficult to read in places and Ancestry gives the family surname as Staves. However on inspection I think it should be Stone. Especially when looking at the last name in the list. I believe on inspection that Willis should actually be Allis. Is this your Family? I've been looking at Piece 361 in the 1841 Gloucestershire census on one of my 1841 census CDs in the area where I think that the STONE family lived, which could have been Kingswood, Hanham, Oldland or Bitton. However, having looked at lots of census pages for about half an hour I am no nearer finding the family because the handwriting on the 1841 census is so faint and my eyesight is not very good. The William STONE, whom Cindy is researching, was baptized in 1788 so his age would probably be rounded down to 50 years. I believe that his mother Alice was part of his household. I think her age could have been rounded down to 85 or 80 years. I know that the STONE family was at Cock Road when James, Joseph and Samuel STONE were baptized on 12th. March 1826 at Oldland, Gloucestershire. Parents were William and Dinah STONE and father's occuaption was coal miner. Can anyone find them in the 1841 census, please? 3. Hi Josephine This is a very interesting account of the type of lawlessness and criminality that existed here within the Gloucestershire and Bristol area around that time. I am sure that many of the names mentioned were descendants of many local residents that still reside throughout the area today. Please keep forwarding these interesting articles to the list they are sure to encourage current and future listers to find out if they had connections with this notorious gang. 3. Hi Listers, Today I'm looking at the marriage of bachelor, William STONE, and spinster, Alice RAWLINS, on 4th. June 1775 at Bitton, Gloucestershire. The marriage was by banns and both bride and groom were of the parish of Bitton. William STONE, the son of Nicholas and Alice, was baptized on 21st. September 1788 at Hanham. I'm wondering if Nicholas and Alice were the parents of William STONE who married Dinah FRY on 28th. July 1811 at Bitton, Gloucestershire. Does anyone have a link with this Nicholas STONE and Alice STONE (nee RAWLINS), please? Josephine

Thanks for your response, Keith. As your message came through I was reading a web page Chronicles of the Cockroad Gang http://www.flickr.com/photos/brizzlebornandbred/3319293364/ This should be of interest to those with ancestors from Bitton and neighbourhood who haven't seen it before and even those who have seen it because it's often interesting to look at information again as I have just done. I was looking at this web page because in previous posts, this week, I have mentioned Mount Hill, where Deborah BRIGHT lived in 1851 and Cock Road the home of the STONE family in 1826. Josephine
