I hold my own deeds because I don't have a mortgage. The best solution is to write to the present owner of the property or if it's rented, write to the tenant and request that your letter be forwarded to the owner. You can then ask the owner if they know where the Deeds are now. As Charani says, if there is a mortgage then the mortgage society/bank will hold the Deeds which will be released to a solicitor if and when the property is being sold.
