Many thanks. I'll add that to the list of things I need to look up at BRO - when I get there! :)) I hope I'll be able to find out what mischief he'd been up to. Probably not a lot different to thousands of other lads then or now. > A2A shows Panter, Woodward & Co as a Vinegar Brewery in Bristol > > This marvellous book has a reference to its position in Bristol > http://www.archive.org/stream/howtoseebristol00nichgoog#page/n116/mode/1up/search/panter > It was in Holton Street near Broad Weir (where my LONG ancestors lived) That is a brilliant book. I've just spent ages reading bits of it :)) Thanks for the reminder about A2A - a very useful resource I forget about. -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, Greinton and Clutton, SOM Asst OPC for Ashcott and Shapwick, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk

    3. Charani, I have a page on my site, in the Parish Chest section, on HMS Formidable, it may be of interest. It shows why some of the boys were sent there.   Regards Mary. 3. How to See Bristol by J F Nicholls is indeed extremely interesting and invaluable for establishing the whereabouts of so many places on its walks. It was actually updated and published in many editions over the years. The online version is the 4th edition of 1885. I have the 5th edition from 1889 and the eleventh edition from 1914 (by which time the name J F Nicholls was dropped as he was long dead). The advantage of the book versions is that they have a map and numerous very interesting illustrations lacking in the Google version; on the other hand the online version has a useful text search facility to supplement the index. The book was published by J W Arrowsmith of Quay Street, a long-established Bristol printer and publisher. I see on the very last page of the book an advert for Fry's Cocoa Extract (prerpared with the "celebrated Cocoa of Caracas"). The Bristol company J S Fry and Sons (a Quaker family) moved out of the city and opened a state-of-the-art chocolate factory at Somerdale, Keynsham, between Bristol and Bath, (in the 1930s I think) but Fry's was subsequently taken over by Cadbury's. Cadbury's has now been bought by the American firm Kraft and the Somerdale factory, which has employed generations of local families, is to close, despite previous indications that it would not. You will understand that the take-over of Cadbury's in general (Cadbury's being seen as a "national treasure") and the closure of Somerdale in particular has generated a huge amount of bad feeling nationally in the UK, so it is very sad to see these old adverts for a once-great Bristol company. I wonder if any listers have/had family members employed by Fry's?
