    1. [B&D] Elizabeth STOKES born 1848 Portbury - lived Wraxall.

    3. I've lost a relation! Elizabeth STOKES was born in Portbury on 3rd Feb 1848 - she had a twin sister, Ann, who died shortly after their birth but they were both christened as soon as they were born. Their parents were Charles & Lavinia STOKES. The family is on the 1851 census of Portbury but by August 1852 they had moved to Wraxall where my great grandmother, another Ann, was born. I know a great deal about my great grandmother but not so much about Elizabeth and I am trying to fill in the gaps. In 1871 Elizabeth was a general domestic servant in West Hill Portishead and I know she witnessed Ann's marriage to William PINNOCK in Reading in 1878 where both Ann & Elizabeth were by then in service. On the 1881 census she is a cook at 17 Russell St., Reading - giving her birth place as Bristol. But after that I find it difficult to find her. By 1891 Ann was widowed and had moved back to Bristol settling in Bedminster with her children. Jumping forward some years - my mother told me how at about the age of 10 (in about 1920) she stayed with her great aunt Lizzie (the Elizabeth I am searching for) at Wraxall so presumably she had moved back to be near members of her family. I omitted to ask whether Lizzie had a husband or when she died so and that is all I know! If anyone else has researched this STOKES family I would be delighted to exchange information. Elizabeth had many siblings so perhaps someone else has looked at the family of Charles & Lavinia STOKES. With thanks Pat

    3. Hi Pat I have just shifted house and have no genealogy time, much of my info is still in boxes....however, I have an Elizabeth STOKES ( 3 x gr.grandmother) As I haven't validated England information that was given to me on this one, you may wish to look further for any connection back in UK. Elizabeth STOKES b. Branston, Leicestershire, England 29 Oct 1836 Arrived at Lyttelton, New Zealand on 'Randolph' (historically for NZ, one of the 1st Four Ships') 16 December 1850. Embarkation: London Her parents were William STOKES b. abt 1818 place unknown to me and Sarah STOKES b. abt. 1815 place unknown to me. I have a huge amount of family history including photographs on this family in NZ. There was a family reunion in 1950, celebrating 100 years in New Zealand and a lot of 'catching up of information' was completed. LARGE FAMILIES. If there happens to be a connection, happy to hear from you again.
