Hi Andy: Try "Guildhall, Manuscripts" <Manuscripts.Guildhall@cityoflondon.gov.uk> The archivist there was very helpful. I had success tracing the voyages of my great grandfather. He was a master mariner from Bristol. He sailed from the mid 1800's to about 1871 when died abroad or at sea.
