When I first Started out on this Hobby,I was fortunate to have found out that my Great,Aunt was still alive,and living in Cardiff. On my first visit in 1983,I found a sprightly lady of 72,who not only supplied me with many Stories of her Grandmother,But provided me with many old Original Birth,Marriage and death Certificates. Also an Alladins Cave of old Photographs,and yes,She had a "Family Bible"of 1853 vintage too. All of this gave me an Immediate Key to open up many Lines of my Paternal Ancestory. I went back straight away to 1777,and to the birth year of my 4 x great,grandfather. On One Visit my Great Aunt Clare provided me with an almost New "Birth Certificate"for my Great,Great,Grandmother. Well,It Looked NEW! But was in fact dated 1925. It had me thinking,WHY did she have this Birth Certificate for someone who was born in 1855? The Penny then dropped,as i had read that "Old aged pensioners"in those days,had to be 70 before they could draw their pittance of an old age Pension. The lady in Question was Ellen BOWEN,Nee COLLINS.[1855-1934] Her Husband Llewellyn Humphreys BOWEN,[1857-1908]had died many years before in Cardiff,at the young age of 50. Their "Marriage Certificate"was also given to me by Clare.This was also an Original and was in a bit of a mess. My Great Aunt explained to me that Ellen had kept this Certificate Stuffed down the front of her dress for years,as to Proof of who she was? [Proof of "Big Brother"was around in those days too!] The Certificate showed yet another example of little white Lies appearing at a Marriage. Insomuch that both parties stated they were "Over 21",when in Fact Llewellyn had just only a few months Previously,had his 17th;Birthday,[born 31/11/1857 in Cardiff] and Ellen was just turned 19.
