Would anyone on the list be familiar with this area of Bristol as it is listed in the 1861 census: Gloucestershire, Bristol District 6, St. Paul. Although the street name is difficult to read, it looks like 110 Portl (or h) noe Terrace 1.? What type of neighborhood is it at the present time and in the 19th century? My great great grandfather David Townsend is listed in the 1861 census at this address. His trade was Coach Maker on the census and also listed on my great grandparent's 1862 Civil Marriage Certificate for Limerick City County Limerick. Would there be a Guild for this trade? Would this occupation bring in a comfortable living for his family. His son William who resided with the family also listed his occupation as a Coach Maker. I do not think the wife of David listed in the 1861 census is the mother of William and my great grandfather Fredrick John. She would have been too young. However, I cannot find any marriage records for this couple or an earlier marriage for David Townsend, possibly in Wales, Monmouth area. David's place of birth on the census is listed as Bitton. Is this far from Bristol and the 1861 address? I ask these questions because we would like to visit this area if it is possible on our next trip over. Our families live in Ireland with cousins in London, Heathrow and Cornwall. We go over about 2X a year. But 2010, due to health & family issues we were not able. Our next trip will be scheduled as a long one. Therefore, we would like to do research for my paternal family in Wales & Bristol area. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. 3 Portland Terrace. I think you will probably find this was near to Portland Square. Probably bombed during the war and now under the M32. It's about 8 miles to Bitton - Go towards Temple Meads station and take the A4 towards Bath. When you get to Keynsham turn left by the church and when you come to the end of that road, turn right and you will come to Bitton. Lots of members of the list have family there. Lovely church with huge churchyard. Not sure why you say Eliza would be too young to be the mother of William as William is 16 and Eliza is 40. Where was Frederick John? There is a very large gap between William and Alice - 12 years - so there may well have been an earlier marriage. On the 1851 census he is there with Eliza and no children. Where did William come from??? Was he adopted?
