    3. Hi Tony I don't really see inconsistencies there. Betty, Betsey, Elizabeth and Eliza were definitely all interchangeable at that stage...and even today. My mother was Ena Elizabeth but her death certificate said Betty and we are only talking 2005! As for "Dealer" - I would think a Commercial Traveller could still be considered a dealer...he was after all dealing. I imagine Commercial Traveller was a fairly new job title. When Elizabeth/Betty's husband died in Lambeth she would naturally move into the home of a member of her family. Good luck. 3. On 17th January I posted a request regarding the deaths of Joseph and Betty Birt who in 1830 were living in Castle Street Bristol. Pat Cook found two deaths in Lambeth. I considered those as possibles as their daughter had moved to Lambeth with their two grandchildren. I ordered the certificates and received them this morning (good service) Joseph b 1771 d 1840 aged 68 was the right age and living 11 Short Street Lambeth described as a Dealer in Glass paper. ( Had been a Dealer in Porter and Bottled Liquor Merchant when in Bristol) In 1841 census living in Short Street was a Elizabeth Birt ( did the enumerator decide Betty was an Elizabeth)aged 50 and an Elizabeth Tucker of the right age to be her granddaughter but both born in County. Betty Birt b 1778 d 1850 certificate showed her to be 71 the right age for my Betty living 11 Short Street but described as the Widow of John Birt a Commercial Traveller the informant was not a family member (Her daughter had died} Given the inconsistencies would you consider that I have found my Joseph and Betty. 2. Hi David The COOLE family were part of the notorious Cock Road Gang of Bitton parish which included the infamous CAINES family. They very often had aliases so could make your task of going back further difficult. Lots has been written about the Cock Road Gang so you can probably Google for more information. Even my WILMOTT family were involved as were many other local families from this area between Kingswood and Hanham. Hope this helps. Bernice

    3. Pleased to help - I've had a lot of help from the group. There's no sign of him (or any other Ando, Andow or Andoe in Queensland but there are a few Andows and Andoes in Victoria https://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/index-search Just put the surname in and hit enter - don't worry about any other fields. It will come up a number of "records shown on 1 page". It cost 99 Australian cents to view it - at the exchange rate that's very cheap. Might be worth a try on both spellings. I've never used that system so I'm not sure how much info is on it. There's also the marriage of a Charles Andoe in NSW and the birth and death of an infant son, all occuring in 1886. Probably not worth following up as it's much more expensive here in NSW, aound $17 each through a transcription agent. Do you know about the National Library of Australia's digitised newspapers? I did a quick search and found his pardon. For example. Sydney Morning Herald, November 25, 1848 (but I think the pardon date was 1st October) CONDITIONAL PARDON.-HÍS Excellency the Governor has directed it to be notified, that Her Majesty has been pleased to authorise the issue of Pardons to the undermentioned persons, on condition that they do not return to the countries or colonies from which they were respectively transported during the remainder of the term of their respective sentences. Pardons available everywhere, save in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Dated 1st October, 1848. Uriah Ando, Claudine; http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/search?adv=y

    3. Hi List, I have been reading a fascinating book by Bill Bryson called "Shakespeare". On page 110 he discusses the variable & casual approach taken to spelling in the Elizabethan era. Christopher Marlowe signed his own name "Cristofer Marley" in his only surviving signature! His university records at Cambridge are for "Christopher Marlen". He was also called Morley & Merlin! Philip Henshaw sometimes signed himself "Hensley" & others wrote Hinshley, Hinchlow, Hensclow, Hynchlowes, Inchlow, Hinchloe....There are eighty different known spellings of Shakespeare from Shappere to Shaxberd! No wonder we struggle to find our ancestors! >From Jenny, Sydney, Australia http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~becher/index.htm

    3. G'day Listers, My 3ggrand father George WYATT is my biggest mystery. My earliest piece of info on George is his marriage to Mary DYER at St. Paul's Portland Square Bristol 27 November 1828. Next I have his eldest son's baptism (William WYATT my 2ggrand father) 7 November 1830 at St Andrew's Clifton, where George & Mary were living at Princes Place, St Paul & George's occupation is a Cook. In 1841 Census the family was living in Bath, but George is not at home and an exhaustive search of Bath 1841 did not find him in Bath. Similar happens in 1851 but the family has moved back to St. Paul Bristol and again George is not at home. In both census Mary is not listed as a widow. In 1856 my 2ggrand father is married at St Andrews Clifton on 20 August. The certificate lists George as his father and occupation is a cook. In the 1861 census Mary is living with her second eldest son and listed as a widow. I also have a birth certificate of George & Mary's 3rd son Alexander in Bath in late 1837, with George supplying the information, again his occupation is a cook. A search of freeBMD has not located a possible death for George. I'm not only looking for George's death, but also his birth/baptism. Regards, Chris Wyatt, in sunny Bendigo, Australia.

    1. Re: [B&D] Birth/Baptism for Sarah MORFORD, please
    2. LawrenceLowe
    3. Phil, you are welcome. In the CDs the marriage is listed under the names index but if you look for it under the by-parish entry there is usually more info, hence Walcot. It also shows they were married by Licence. A look at Boyd's Marriage Index on the "Origins Network.com" gives Sarah's name as "Murphot", this is also mentioned on the B&AFHS CD as an alternative name. I also spotted that in 1726 a Morford married a West according the the Marriage Licence Allegations Index - Vicar-General. More details of this entry requires cash I'm sorry to say as it is a pay-for-a-copy on "Origins Network.com". The "applicant", usually the groom but not always, was named West so if this is Sarah's parents then her mother would have been Elizabeth West as you suggest. A lot of speculation but worth researching I would suggest. Hope this helps. -----Original Message----- From: Phil Warn [mailto:philwarnorp@googlemail.com] Sent: Monday, January 18, 2010 7:01 PM To: lawrencelowe@yahoo.co.uk; bristol_and_district@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [B&D] Birth/Baptism for Sarah MORFORD, please Hi Lawrence, Brilliant.
