I have found a quite stunning lack of awareness amongst these institutions that the GRO birth indexes are online in several places and that, since the third quarter of 1911, the indexes supply the maiden name of the mother. Thus anyone born in virtually the last 100 years in England & Wales will have their mother's maiden name identified - you don't even have to buy the certificate in the great majority of casesm only the most recent ones that are not yet online. When the birth indexes first went online I went to my bank and asked them to change my mother's maiden name. It took me a while to explain to a puzzled girl clerk why I wanted them to do this, but eventually they did it - it did, however, take them THREE WEEKS to accomplish! My advice is NEVER give your mother's maiden name to a bank, building society or other institution. Make something up! 1. [B&D] Birth Certificates.
    2. robert williams
    3. When I first Started out on this Hobby,I was fortunate to have found out that my Great,Aunt was still alive, and living in Cardiff. On my first visit in 1983,I found a sprightly lady of 72,who not only supplied me with many Stories of her Grandmother,But provided me with many old Original Birth,Marriage and death Certificates. Also an Alladins Cave of old Photographs, and yes,She had a "Family Bible"of 1853 vintage too. All of this gave me an Immediate Key to open up many Lines of my Paternal Ancestory. I went back straight away to 1777,and to the birth year of my 4 x great, grandfather. On One Visit my Great Aunt Clare provided me with an almost New "Birth Certificate"for my Great,Great,Grandmother. Well,It Looked NEW! But was in fact dated 1925. It had me thinking,WHY did she have this Birth Certificate for someone who was born in 1855? The Penny then dropped,as i had read that "Old aged pensioners"in those days, had to be 70 before they could draw their pittance of an old age Pension. The lady in Question was Ellen BOWEN,Nee COLLINS.[1855-1934] Her Husband Llewellyn Humphreys BOWEN,[1857-1908]had died many years before in Cardiff,at the young age of 50. Their "Marriage Certificate"was also given to me by Clare. This was also an Original and was in a bit of a mess. My Great Aunt explained to me that Ellen had kept this Certificate Stuffed down the front of her dress for years,as to Proof of who she was? [Proof of "Big Brother"was around in those days too!] The Certificate showed yet another example of little white Lies appearing at a Marriage. Insomuch that both parties stated they were "Over 21",when in Fact Llewellyn had just only a few months Previously, had his 17th;Birthday,[born 31/11/1857 in Cardiff] and Ellen was just turned 19. Ellen BOWEN died in Cardiff in 1931 aged 74. BTW;I have them all in the Parish Registers & Census Returns. Cheers Graham. -- Graham Williams.of Canton,Cardiff. Chairman,"Canton Historical Society". 3. My Apologies for stating that the Heir Hunters Team had access to the BMD;Records in their office. I did mean of course,The "Indexes". If you would believe the trouble Ive had in the past in Drawing out MY Money from my OWN Account in the Building Societies,You would wonder why I bothered in the first place? They will NOT except a Birth Certificate as Proof of who I was. Even accompanied by a Recent Gas/Electricity/Water Bill's,showing them the SAME Address as whats on my "Birth Certificate!" So when I attempt to Draw out any Money,I take with me a Letter from the "Department Of Works And Pensions"with me as one bit of Acceptable Evidence.A "Debit Card"the second bit,and yes,My Birth Certificate. So there I am,loaded down with 3 bits of evidence to prove to them who I am. Whilst all those queing behind me have their Passports or Driving Licences with them. As I have neither of those documents. I had the same problem trying to open an Account with my Building Society in the first place. In the end, they Tried the "Electoral Register"available On-Line to prove to them, who I was. I told them my full name of Robert Graham WILLIAMS. Nothing Showed up! I explained to the Boss of that Building Society that I Had lived at my address All my Life! She then tried just Robert WILLIAMS. Still No Joy. Then she tried R.G;WILLIAMS. Bingo! I was in. Which brings me on to ask,What Evidence does one need to apply for a Passport & Driving Licence? Would it be a "Birth Certificate"by any Chance? The song "There's a hole in my Bucket,Dear ..........."Springs to mind! Cheers Graham. Graham Williams.of Canton,Cardiff. Chairman,"Canton Historical Society". Glam;FHS;#551.

    3. As many of you know, I went to the US last Sept - Nov and had a great time meeting up with several members of our list as well as friends and cousins and, of course, visiting the National Women's Hall of Fame for the induction ceremony of my ancestor. So, before I get too long in the tooth, I thought I would take the long trip down under and meet up with various cousins and friends and to see where my granddaughter's ancestors lived. 3 years ago I went to Canada and 20 of us met up for a bunfight at Merrickville which was absolutely great. Is there any chance of meeting up with any of you while I am in Oz? I am planning to leave England around 7th October, spending a week in the Emirates with friends to recover and then going on to Perth. After spending about 10 days in the Western area, I am going across to Brisbane, Adelaide, Sydney and then up the Eastern coast of Queensland to visit a 3rd and an 8th cousin that I've been in touch with for years. I've just found that they live only 20 minutes apart which is great. Do any of you live near any of the areas I am visiting - I would hate to be at the bottom of your road and not stop to say 'hi'. Here are some of the locations I am planning to visit. I will leave Oz around 27th November for another week in the Emirates. Rockingham (fellow researcher) Mandurah (previous guest to Cornwall) Peregian Beach (3rd cousin) Mooloolaba, QLD, (8th cousin) Ingle Farm (cousin's cousin) Melbourne (granddaughter's 4x2 cousin) I had relations who lived in Lansvale NSW - WHITE ex Bristol. 3. The only restriction on death certificates is if they are for a child, and then the 50 year rule cuts in. The only thing is, they charge £1.50 more for it. I was under the impression the 50 year rule had been dropped since the FRC had closed because I ordered 3 death certs online, all from the 1980s without needing to give any more information than I would for death certs from the 1880s. I don't have an RU number either. I miss the FRC too. I think it was a real backward step withdrawing access to the actual volumes. It was also handy if there were any queries on FMP index entries because they'd send someone round to have a look at the actual index. FMP can't do that now the indices are in Basingstoke. -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, Greinton and Clutton, SOM Asst OPC for Ashcott and Shapwick, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to BRISTOL_AND_DISTRICT-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
